THE theory behind the idea that cutting taxes will increase government revenue is based on the belief that doing so will broaden the tax base and bring in more money to the government. It is based on the work of Arthur Laffer and is summed up in what is called the Laffer Curve. For the most part, I think the theory stinks and can even be counterproductive. That's why I call it the Laugher Curve.
I live in a Cape Girardeau apartment complex where we share a common parking lot with the next building. We park on our side, they on theirs. Fireworks were set off in the parking lot, which is legal, but it is as if someone is setting off fireworks right under your kitchen or living room window. I called the police, as it was annoying and we were worried about damage to our cars and the building. The police basically did nothing. They were not sure how the law pertained to this as it's a private lot. They thought it might be the responsibility of the landlord. Our landlord does not care. I cannot believe the police can do nothing about this. It is as if we have no rights at all or any protection from those who wish to do as they please with no regard for others rights. I hope someday the city will ban personal fireworks.
THE No. 1 concern of the world may be the recession. The No. 1 concern of Speak Out comments may be lawn clippings in the street.
THIS is in regards to the U.S. Postal Service wanting to raise the price of a stamp two cents: Why don't they just make it an even 50 cents and $10 for a book of 20 stamps? That would be simpler and easier. Raise it to 50 cents and be done with it. They're going to raise it again probably in another two years anyway.
I went to Cape Splash. It was a nice place. It could be better though if it had a big wave pool like Poplar Bluff does. That would make it a whole lot better.
I hope Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder has thought through his lawsuit against national health care. He has to be careful. The only thing worse than national health care would be getting Missouri in a position where we have to pay for national health care but don't get any because we have a lawsuit against it. We don't want to pay for national health care.
SHAME on someone for complaining. The Fourth of July comes once a year. Kids love loud noises in the daylight for one or two weeks after the Fourth of July. Have fun while you can.
OCEAN wave energy is the energy of the future. Zero pollution. No cost. Free energy. There is enough wave energy on this earth to power the electrical needs of the entire planet 10 times over.
JOB discrimination is not worth the fight. Be grateful you have a job. Do your job to the best of your ability. Make yourself indispensable. Maybe it's my generation speaking, but I never cared what someone else was being paid. I never thought to compare. I loved my job. Due to budget cuts the job was discontinued. It's OK, because I enjoyed it.
LT. Gov. Peter Kinder and his rich Republican friends don't want any change in health care, as they have the money to have what ever plan they want. He doesn't care about the working people who are paying a big part of their paychecks to have high-priced insurance coverage and getting by from one paycheck to the next.
IN reference to Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder's lawsuit against the new federal health care bill, I would like to paraphrase Rush Limbaugh when he was talking about President Obama: I hope he fails.
I'M disappointed in myself. I took pride in thinking I knew U.S. constitutional history. Yet a local member of the tea party named Tom Young said Social Security was "unconstitutional." When did the high court make that ruling?
A hallmark of conservatism is deference to the legislative branch. Missouri Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder wants the federal courts to impose his view of what the recently passed health care bill should or should not be. This is anything but conservatism. It is a run-wild right-wing version of left-wing activism.
SO workers at the city transfer station are charging fees for trash arriving uncovered. Don't you think that order came from someone up the ladder? If you don't like it, find out who has the power to change it. It seems like those at the bottom are always being blamed.
