I ALWAYS tie my trash bags. Perhaps it's can pickers looking for aluminum cans who untie them.

Right-wing radicals

RIGHT-WINGERS like David Limbaugh and Rush Limbaugh are the mirror image of the New Left of the 1960s. They are just as radical and want to reconstruct the world in their own image by warfare, government propaganda and, apparently, any means necessary. Luckily, no major presidential candidate fits the Gingrich-Limbaugh-Rumsfeld mold. The American people (as they always do) have the sense to realize left- and right-wing radicalism when they see it and reject it out of hand. Though columnists and radio talk-show hosts continue to try to create divisiveness after the election is over, I have a hunch that we're in for an era of good feelings and that extremists will be disregarded.

Useful violence

WAY TO go on the man who captured a robber and hog-tied him. The Bible says something about violence begetting violence, but sometimes it helps to put things back in order. I love it.

Mosquito spraying

THE CITY is spraying for mosquitoes. Unlike years past, city crews are spraying early in the morning in response to complaints about spraying in the evenings. The city truck has driven by at least four times already this year.

It's a privilege

POOR PEOPLE can't afford a house, but buying a house is not a right, It is a privilege for those who work hard. It is not something the government hands you. You go to school and get a good job. Then you can afford nice things. I am tired of people expecting the government to hand them everything.

Visiting Iraq

DAVID LIMBAUGH wants Barack Obama to take a trip to Iraq with John McCain. That's not a bad idea. Out of curiosity, how many times had Iraq been visited by David Limbaugh?

Digital conversion

NOT TOO long ago Speak Out was deluged with comments from people outraged over the upcoming change from analog to digital television signals. These people were complaining before they had all the facts just because it was a change. I hooked up my girlfriend's digital converter box last weekend. It was simple to install. I was expecting the signal to be better but was amazed at how much better it actually is. Before she got three channels, and one was fuzzy. Now she gets six, and they are all crystal clear with great audio quality. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Once the changeover is complete, new and free digital channels similar to cable channels will start coming on air. Believe me, if a technophobe like my girlfriend can use and understand it, anyone can. Quit complaining, send for the discount coupon, hook up the digital converter and enjoy. You're going to love it.
