Payment plan

I SAY let university, schools and churches help pay for the storm-water problems instead of asking taxpayers to approve another sales-tax increase. They're riding a gravy train while all of us taxpayers are feeling the brunt of it. I can't afford anymore taxes. My vote is no.

God in school

I WANT to thank the teacher at Jackson Junior High School for the positive comment "God is there." For all of us who profess to be Christians, the message serves as reminder of what we profess to believe. This teacher has passed on a lesson to all of us. God is in my classroom every day. He is guiding my teaching. He is there in the wonder and joy of my pupils' learning. The message continues. Rather than all the lamenting in regard to how others use our Constitution and Supreme Court to keep prayer out of our public schools, have the faith of the teacher. Remind the teachers and students while in school to find time to thank God for the school. Every student can invite God to be with him in our public schools. No law and no court can keep God out of our public schools. If we are with him, he is with us.

Good time for judge

THIS IS the best possible time for our friend, Stephen Limbaugh, to get a federal judgeship. Right now, conservatives are in charge of the legislature and the governorship, so they can replace Limbaugh with another conservative.

More choices

I THINK there is a need for a community college in Cape Girardeau. Schools such as Metro Business College wouldn't be everybody's thing. The Career and Technology Center is for those on the technology ladder. There's not that in-between affordable school for people who want to make up their minds. Southeast Missouri State University is expensive. I think a community college would benefit the whole community and provide more choices in life.

Mosquito spraying

I'VE BEEN sprayed by the mosquito control truck last year and this year. I have a sinus reaction. My eye is red, and I feel malaise. I feel that this is not safe for the people. The truck just goes up and down the street with no schedule, and the driver doesn't turn off the machine when he sees people. I've seen children sprayed. Cape Gir-ardeau needs to have a tire collection to pick up all the tires that in people's front and back yards that have water in them where the mosquitoes are breeding.

Tax increases

I'D LIKE to remind everybody that our sales tax went up half a percentage point Jan. 1 to almost 7.5 percent, and this year there is also a county tax reassessment on your property, which means, of course, an increase. I am not in favor of this half-cent park tax that is being suggested.

Park for kids

I AM a fairly new resident of Jackson. I have small children. I would like to know if there is a park in Jackson that has the stuff the Cape County South Park has. I've looked at the parks in Jackson, and they're not very nice. If there is a park, When you have two small children, it's not very easy to take them to that kind of a park. I would like to see Jackson get a decent park. That would be nice.

Pool sunshine

I go to Central Municipal Pool three times a week for water aerobics. I have yet to see anything ugly or moldy at the Central pool. I like it when the bubble comes off, because I love the warm sunshine. If we put up a new building, we wouldn't have the sunshine when we get in the water. I love the Central pool.

Sharing tax revenue

THE MAYOR of Cape Girar-deau seems obsessed with moving all the development to the I-55 interchange at Jackson so that Cape Girardeau can share its sales-tax dollars with Jackson while he attempts to raise taxes on Cape Girardeau citizens. If Cape Girardeau is to share the sales-tax revenue at the new interchange, why don't we just let Jackson administration manage Cape Girardeau's affairs?

Park memorial

IT LOOKS like another memorial is being planned for the Courthouse Park near the fountain. If so, let's hope it's a living memorial, not another granite slab like the memorial for the Vietnam veterans (which has a misspelled word). Why not plant a tree instead? I enjoy seeing the beautiful white blooming tree planted near there that blooms every spring, which is also a memorial. The park should be a place for enjoyment with nature, not one made out of granite slabs. Put a memorial plaque near a tree if you must but not any more granite slabs. Who is in charge of deciding this?

Not on the ballot

SO GOV. Matt Blunt's chief of staff Ed Martin thinks he can tell the attorney general how and when to do his job? I don't recall seeing his name on a ballot. I do, however, remember that Jay Nixon beat his opponent by 500,000 votes, while Martin's boss squeaked out a win by 80,000 votes.

Try hauling hay

I HAVE been reading comments about children not having enough to do to keep them out of trouble. Here's a solution: a hard day's work. Get together a group of friends and haul hay for farmers this summer. The pay is good, the work is hard and you will know more about your area and meet awesome people. The children will be in shape for fall sports and be too tired to get into trouble.

Hypocritical contest

AS A 40-year-old non-feminist, I found the sexiest man competition being run by SHE magazine to be not just ironic, but also hypocritical. For years I've heard women blast the Miss USA contests and other sexy woman competitions. Now it's OK to turn it around and apply it to men. I hope this is not the type of journalism we can expect from SHE and other Southeast Missourian publications in the future.

Deadbeat moms

IT'S GOOD to see that Kansas City's Father's Day child-support sweep included a few mothers who were behind in their support. If there were ever a study targeting fathers versus mothers who are behind in child support, I'm betting the deadbeat mothers percentage would be much higher.
