I just read the article about this year's air show lineup. It sounds like it is going to be good. Kudos to everyone working to bring in the groups. Good job. Change of art
THE Arts Council of Southeast Missouri might think about incorporating more diverse art in its gallery. One can only handle so many landscapes and fruit bowls.
Paid letters
THE Southeast Missourian is apparently getting a lot of heat for its Paid Election Letter policy. What else would explain devoting an editorial once again explaining the policy? The naive hope that the letters will be "positive" aside, I think the policy is fair and balanced. Of course, the paper could refuse to publish anything but letters with a positive instead of negative tone, but only if it is the desire of the Southeast Missourian to see the cash flow derived from Paid Election Letters reduced to zero.

Good living
THE crimes associated with BP, Bernie Madoff, big banks, Enron and a rogues gallery of others reminded me of a quote from a clinical psychiatrist, written in 1975. "The American dream is in part responsible for a great deal of crime and violence because people feel the country owes them not only a living but a good living."
All those jobs
A casino in Cape Girardeau is a win-win situation for everyone in this area. So many jobs would come to Cape Girardeau if a casino opens. You would have management, people working in marketing, casino hosts, people who print the cards, slot people, mechanics, dealers, cocktail waitresses, cooks and restaurant wait staff, cleaning crews and security guards. I've never felt more secure than I am in a casino because you know someone is there if you need help. It would be nothing but good for Cape Girardeau.
Losers' money
I'M all for my grandchildren. I help every chance I get. I'd love to give my money to my grandchildren instead of some casino. Casinos are built on losers' money, not winners.
Time to retire
COLUMNIST Cal Thomas's piling-on piece about the need for White House correspondent Helen Thomas to retire was beyond the pale, particularly in the sense that Helen's retirement should have been preceded by Cal's.
