I LIVE in Clover Dell Subdivision on Wheeler Drive in Scott City. A few months ago there was an article about water damaging basements and homes. Can anybody on city council tell us what's going on with the field being plowed up to our yards with no easement and dirt being piled in yards in the back of our houses all the way down Wheeler?
DOES ANYONE else in Cape Girardeau remember the April 1 about 20 years ago when we started the day with sleet that turned to snow that turned to rain, complete with thunder, lightning and a tornado watch that ended in sunny blue skies? That's our Missouri.
CAPE GIRARDEAU would be a cleaner, nicer city if there were more trash receptacles along our streets and highways. It is hard to find a place to dispose of those soda cups, burger wrappers and smelly diapers without stopping and getting out of your vehicle. That's why so many get tossed out on the road.
IT IS rather sad to realize that our political hopefuls have to raise millions of dollars in an attempt to buy a successful win. It is sad to know that our government contributes funds to their campaigns under the guise of helping more lower-income citizens run for office. Perhaps the saddest of all is that none of the political hopefuls or the government feel any guilt whatsoever in spending these huge funds in order to purchase their careers when people in America are suffering in poverty. Shame on them all for bragging about their campaign funds.
SOUTHEAST MISSOURI State University should not be allowed to increase tuition rates for students to pay for the cultural center. That was not one of the options promised when the issue of funding was finally ended. The university should also not be allowed to use any funds from the state's student Scholarship loan funds to pay for this boondoggle, because those funds were not available at the time. And I hope the legislature has enough common sense to keep the scholarship loan funds for scholarships or reduce the interest rate on the loans.
"CARUTHERSVILLE will be rebuilt by its people, not government agencies." This is from a recent Southeast Missourian editorial. Does this mean that government agencies have somehow taken on a shiftless existence of their own and are no longer made up of real people? If so, that's scary.
IMMIGRATION OR invasion? Immigrants come here after they have been given permission to do so. Invaders come at will without our permission.
NOW THAT'S the kind of Show Me State common horse sense I like to see. If quality students are indeed making illegal but welcome incursions into the Leopold School District, solve the problem and incorporate them all by extending the school district's boundaries. If doing so infringes on other school district boundaries, so be it. Public school choice will become a fact, though not by law.
IN ORDER to regain his political capital, President Bush will not only have to apologize for all the sins of his administration but for all the sins of all prior administrations and, besides that, appear contrite and shed some tears while apologizing on "The Oprah Winfrey Show."
THE COST of the River Campus will not be borne just by the students, but also by faculty and staff who can expect their wages and benefits to continue to lag behind similar institutions.
I JOINED the military right after the first Gulf War started. It was an honor for me to enlist and to serve my country. My four years of service to this great nation were served in Europe. Young men in Italy have a choice, actually two choices. 1. Join the military for two years after they turn 18. 2. Go to college for two years. Be glad we live in the United States where we can make our own decisions.
PLEASE DO a story with the truth about Iraq's tie to the attacks on the World Trade Center. President Bush again in a speech alluded to Iraq being a haven for terrorist training prior to 9-11. Let's tell the truth. Iraq wasn't on the list of 45 countries that supported terrorist activities. If the lie is told enough, it seems sooner or later it becomes the truth. Facts are facts no matter what political side they help or hurt. Saying they are not facts doesn't make them not facts.
