CAN anybody tell me why school sports, with the money situation we've got, are more important than our teachers and learning? I'd like somebody to answer that. We need money for books and teachers.

Party of change

ONE great Democratic president, John F. Kennedy, whom I supported, proclaimed "Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country," which Democrats seem to have forgotten today. Today's liberal Democrats ask what can the government do for us next and to hell with this country's future. The Democratic Party is the party of abortion, gay rights, atheism, moral decline, socialists and brainwashing of our youths. What part of this are supposed Christians proud of? What fraud. What gall. What hypocrites.

Needs our prayers

I'M tired of the complaints about the president. Give him a chance. Be thankful for what you have. Instead of complaining about the president, remember him in your prayers. The Democrats and Republicans need our prayer to work together and work things out.

Uniting parties

THERE is a great divide between the two major political parties' beliefs. Each side will only listen to their own media sources and twist news stories to their own advantage. If history repeats itself, the Republicans will retake control of Congress in November, and the polarization will only intensify. President Obama has until October to bring both parties together. After the election he will become a lame-duck president.

Constituents' voices

SAYING no to bad legislation doesn't make someone an obstructionist as long as they're listening to their constituents.

Homeless shelter

THE Rev. Larry Rice was in Advance, Mo., on March 28 seeking support for his homeless shelter in Cape Girardeau. Get behind the Shelter of Hope or Rice will get his shelter in Cape Girardeau. Chaplain Terry Wildman is doing a good job with the homeless in Cape Girardeau.

Limit legislators

HERE are a few suggestions for revamping our leadership: Two-term limit for federal legislators. Age limit of 50 years old by term's end. No free travel. Publish activity of legislators, as already being done by this paper. Eliminate the freebies those in Congress have granted themselves. Our leadership wrongly defines its own responsibilities, work ethic, compensation. This is not government by the people, of the people, for the people. It's government by the few.

Revamping education

IT is sad that only two of the 50 states (Delaware and Tennessee) qualified for Race to the Top grants designed for states that implement innovative solutions to student underachievement. However, after reading the most recent magazine from the once politically neutral Missouri State Teachers Association, I'm not surprised. To me, the published words of the executive director and president of the organization were so radical they were beyond the most extreme elements of the energetic tea party express.

Unchecked logs

YES, young drivers with a permit are expected to log their driving hours with parental signatures. But when they take the driving test, no one ever looks at their logs to see if they have completed them or not. At least that was our experience. I made my daughter log her driving hours even though she had been told by others, "They don't even look at it." So what do you do?

Calories and weight

THE uproar over fast food causing children to be obese is moronic at best. If you eat more calories than you expend, you gain weight. If you expend more calories than you consume, you lose weight. There is no secret plan or diet. This is simple physics. I know this is not popular, but it is the truth.

Costly grandstanding

RECENTLY, the Missouri House of Representatives spent time debating the need for a slaughterhouse to produce horse meat for human consumption. Also debated have been measures to opt out of federal health care laws just passed. Every year, a host of measures are introduced opposing abortion. Most of these measures are either unconstitutional or would cost the state millions to defend if passed. They are more representative of electioneering and grandstanding than of common sense. Every year many bills, some useful, die an inglorious death the last day of the session because the legislature runs out of time to consider them. These are just a few examples of political grandstanding that cost taxpayers plenty and impede useful legislation.

Spring flowers

GOD'S beauty is all around us. Let's enjoy this beautiful spring and all the blossoms.
