Piracy defense

WHY in the world does any ship captain permit a boat to approach out on the high seas and not do anything about it before pirates board? The captain ought to have a box of dynamite, hand grenades or something and blow the boat out of the water. There needs to be some type of enforcement that would let them defend themselves.

For the people

I say good for Rod Jetton. I don't care that he's a political consultant. He's speaking for me. He was one of the better state legislators we've had. You don't know what Ameren is trying to do. I don't want a Three Mile Island in my state. So good for Jetton, and good for state Sen. Jason Crowell. They're on the side of the people.

Movie reviews

I'D like to thank Steve Turner for his nice review of "Adventureland." It wasn't really on top of my list, but maybe now I'll see it. I know I didn't care for "Knocked Up." It wasn't worth the time and money to see. Maybe "Adventureland" will be better than "Knocked Up." Let's hope.

Hospital visiting

REGARDING the column by Michael Judd: He said one reason to allow gay marriage is so gay couples can visit each other in the hospital. I'd like to know where these hospitals are that don't allow gay couples to visit each other. I've been a nurse for more than 20 years and worked in hospitals in three states. I've never seen anybody turned away from visiting someone in the hospital unless that person has specifically requested that they not visit. It's not unusual to find a dozen people visiting a patient all at once. Some are relatives. Some are neighbors. I don't know who some of them are.

Washington's words

WHEN I look at the massive growth of government that is occurring under President Obama, I think we should all remember the words of George Washington when he said, "Government is a dangerous servant and a fearful master."

Thanks for hug

I would like to thank to the beautiful woman who was stocking shelves in Wal-Mart on Saturday. I was not having a good day, and my feelings must have been showing. She smiled at me and said, "Hi there. Do you need a hug?" Then she opened her arms wide and gave me a hug. This grandma wants her to know that meant so much to me.
