I am so glad the smoking ban failed. I quit smoking 35 years ago. However this was about property owners' rights, not smoking. This was a left-wing power grab just like global warming and Prop B. Benjamin Franklin said those that would give up freedom for security deserve neither...
Freedom for security
I am so glad the smoking ban failed. I quit smoking 35 years ago. However this was about property owners' rights, not smoking. This was a left-wing power grab just like global warming and Prop B. Benjamin Franklin said those that would give up freedom for security deserve neither.
Wastewater, cigarettes
DID Cape Girardeau voters decide to spend $72 million on the wastewater plant so the hoard of smokers could flush all their cigarette butts instead of tossing them out at every intersection, storefront and yard in town?
Teacher bias
THERE are certain teachers at Cape Girardeau Central High School who need to refrain from making extremely biased political comments to their students.
Good move
I'M so glad they decided to remove four of the planned bike lanes. Way to go, Cape Girardeau.
Habitat house
I know a lady that had a Habitat house built, and it was supposed to be for her and her three children. She is a single mom. Well, come moving in day they all moved in and guess what? She had her boyfriend move in with her. That does not seem right.
Taylor Swift
I just found out that Taylor Swift won entertainer of the year at the CMAs. How in the world did that happen? I'd like to know who votes on these things. She sure did not deserve to win.
Great service
THE Jackson DMV has great customer service. I go to their office many times a year, and they are always friendly and greet you with a smile. The last time I went in they were so busy due to the Marble Hill DMV closing, and I still received the great service that I always do.
Federal spending
THERE was an article in the Drudge Report recently that said the federal government in March spent eight times as much money as it had in income. Well, March is a special month because there are a lot of income tax returns. But still you can't spend eight times your income.
Barking dogs
TO the person complaining about the dogs barking all day long and all night long, why don't you go outside and see what the dogs are barking about? There's got to be something out there that he or she is barking at. Or wear earplugs if you can't find out why.
Homeless support
WHERE are all my federal, state and county taxes going to help support these poor homeless students? What about WIC? There are all kinds of programs out there, and talking about the family that was living in the van, where's the health and human services at?
Voting sector
I believe seniors are being ignored by politicians. What they need to know is how many of us baby boomers will be voting in the coming years.

Benefits issue
THE reason unemployment is so bad is people want the best job for more money. When unemployment is more than what some jobs pay, why not sit at home and wait for the check? Unemployment needs to stop.
Military recruitment
ASK a military recruiter if he has seen military action. Chances are, he hasn't. He only has to supply his quota of enlistees.
Truancy punishment
I believe punishing a parent for a child not attending school is totally wrong. Punish the child by putting them in juvenile detention with the parents' consent.
Freedom of speech
WE are giving the people like the pastor who burned the Quran freedom to speak out when it isn't what the American people want. Same with the protesters at military funerals. We should be only giving theses rights to the ones who are for what the American people stand for.
Postal Clause
TO the people who say that we need to get rid of the U.S. Postal Service because it is a waste of taxpayers' money and not a part of the U.S. Constitution, take the time to look up Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 of the Constitution -- also known as the Postal Clause.
Siren song
I read Gary Rust's gushing tribute to "dog-eat-dog," "survival of the fittest," "no exceptions made to rugged individualism" tribute to Ayn "Atlas Shrugged" Rand and got all fired up and promised myself to become a 100 percent Rand devotee. Then, the very next day, I read about the plight of homeless students in Cape Girardeau and asked myself what Ayn Rand would do. I concluded she would recommend doing nothing. Then I got on my knees and begged forgiveness for being lured by the siren song of the sinister Rand.
Great columns
I am so thrilled to read Joe Sullivan tell it like he really thinks it is in many of his recent columns.
Autism therapies
THIS is disheartening, but according to recent studies, drugs and behavioral therapies don't work well, if at all, for those with autistic spectrum disorders.
Bus drivers
IF your child rides the school bus, you might want to monitor the bus driver more closely. A bus driver passed my house recently texting on her phone. Our children are at risk with these kind of drivers.
Parking
I think I should be entitled to park on the street in front of the property that I pay taxes on.
Horse transportation
I think everyone should be looking for a horse to ride. They tried to ban smoking in Cape Girardeau, so I can only assume that the next thing will be cars, after all they cause pollution as well. I can see it now, hitching posts and watering troughs lining the streets of Cape Girardeau. Back to the good ole days.
