City priorities

DO Cape Girardeau's city council members, city manager or finance director have any common sense? They let a company owe more than $1 million in back rent and do nothing for years. If I miss my water payment they shut it off. Quit worrying about a dog park or sidewalks and fix the roads.

Bike trail

THE proposed bike routes include Hopper Road. Where will the parents of Clippard School students be able to park for special events if they can't park on Hopper?

Yard sale signs

AS soon as a garage sale is over the yard sign needs to be taken down. Don't leave it up for a week or two. That is uncalled for.

Casino funding

THE initiative to change the funding for the gambling boat is doing exactly what I thought it would do. It is wrong to ear mark money for one project and then redirect funds after it's been voted in. The lottery was supposed to go to education, now it goes into the general fund.

Inappropriate act

I took my niece to the Big Man on Campus program at Cape Girardeau Central High School because it was for a good cause. I was extremely disappointed because one of the acts was inappropriate. They need to monitor this behavior or put a rating on the show.

Stopping fraud

IN regards to cutting down fraud on food stamps, why not have the photograph of the individual on their card? If they have a picture on the card, maybe that would cut down the food stamp fraud.

Drop out rate

FOR years every young person was told that he or she must get an education to get a good job and go to college to get even a better job. Does college make you a smarter person? More mature, yes. Smarter, maybe. I see all the supposedly smart people running our colleges and schools. They can't even figure out the dropout rate? With today's technology it's just a push of the button and the numbers should be right there.

U.S. status

WITH each passing day, the United States of America becomes less and less like the country of my youth and more and more like the Soviet Union of my youth.

VA health care

THE VA provides me with wonderful care. All I had to do was follow the well established process, provide the proper service connected paperwork, and be honest about my service record. Maybe others who are experiencing difficulties should follow suit.

Sound problem

LOOK at the homes in the downtown area. These are not new buildings. They were there before the bars that blast the loud music. Would the city like to see these homes standing empty? Would the city like to see other business owners take their business out of the downtown area? If the loud music is allowed to stay, will your neighborhood be next?

Union problem

I am a teacher, but I agree with what the Republicans have done in Wisconsin. Why should government employees have job security that allows poor and lazy workers to keep their jobs? In other businesses these types of employees would be fired and better ones would be hired. Instead, we give tenure to teachers and then when they get lazy or aren't doing their job, administrators don't use due process to get rid of them for fear of a lawsuit. Our children suffer because of this.

Downtown eyesore

WHAT'S up with downtown? In successive weeks, I've seen broken benches laying in the streets, huge piles of trash in the alleyways, trash cans sitting in front of buildings, and someone gathering up beer bottles from the courthouse lawn. This week it was impossible to walk down the sidewalk of Main Street without stepping in broken glass.

Obama and Gitmo

THANK you, President Obama for keeping Gitmo open and indefinitely detaining accused terrorists without trial. You will get my vote and support just like I voted for and supported President George W. Bush.

Economic problems

THE reason why our economy is the way it is, is because the government gave the big companies a tax cut to take our jobs overseas, good workers couldn't be found in the states, and people who own the businesses are greedy.
