Excellent program

THE SOUTHEAST Missouri State University symphony's program was excellent. Its selection of music was appreciated.

Get the guilty

WITH THE guilty verdict against Scooter Libby, we have another Watergate and Iran-Contra. The conviction of Libby is only the tip of the iceberg. Notes presented in the trial show the vice president was the one who told Libby about the Wilsons. It is time for an independent investigator to find the truth and get the guilty parties. President Bush said whoever leaked the name would be punished. Is he a liar on this too?

Beloved pets

I ENJOY reading Sam Blackwell's column, and the story of Alvie's passing touched my heart deeply. I lost my beloved cat Ollie three years ago, and I still miss her every day. I found comfort in the new cat that I have, and I also know that Ollie is running around happy and healthy on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.

Look no further

FOR THOSE of you clamoring for government-provided universal health care, look no further than the disaster at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Do you really want those who responded to Katrina and those who are in charge of the Department of Motor Vehicles in charge of your health-care decisions?

Out-of-the way city

WHY WOULD flying to Cincinnati make any sense? St. Louis is an airport where many flights are nonstop. Cincinnati is a stopover on a connecting flight. Looking past the Procter & Gamble connection, could this also be a way to get more money through travelers having to take flights? I and many other air passengers did not know that a change in carriers would change flight plans to an out-of-the-way city. This is not only a poor decision, it is also a way to make sure people drive to St. Louis to fly out rather than being inconvenienced by connecting in Cincinnati.

Rapid change

CLIMATE CHANGE is a naturally occurring event that has been going on for millions of years, but the accelerated change rate we are experiencing isn't the norm and has been linked to human activities. Natural swings that occur over many centuries can be adapted to, but the rapid change that is taking place now will not be so easy to adjust to. A lot of plants and animals will be at risk, including humans.

Funding not provided

I AM a retired veteran who has spent several years with big hospitals from all over the country. I can tell you without a doubt that the Walter Reed scandal is not an isolated incident. This is happening all over our country and has been going on every since the Vietnam War. Every time I complained about conditions, I was told by staff members that the administration refused to grant needed funding for improvements of the medical facility and equipment. Both political parties are guilty of this and should be ashamed. They should be held accountable. They just didn't care enough to provide funding for it.

Dangerous ditches

DANGER ON new Highway 34-72: Three schools with combined enrollment of more than 2,000 children use the West and East Lane each day. Millions of dollars are being spent on the highway. How could Jackson and the school district allow the Missouri Department of Transportation to leave a couple of deep ditches only a couple of feet from the roadway? When someone makes a mistake driving, there will be a serious accident. Children going to school have to walk in the highway. Where is the common sense?

Deserves credit

IN REGARD to the school bus incident where the driver passed out: It's great that the little girl got praised. I also think Joyce Moyers, the woman who got on the bus and held her foot on the brakes until the police got there should get a little credit too.

Rates hit seniors

JACKSON SAID the electric-rate increase would not affect senior citizens. Some of the residents of senior-citizen housing in Jackson had electric bills over $200. They are all in one bedroom apartments.

Gravel mystery

I WISH someone would explain why the Cape Girardeau County road department put gravel on County Road 244 and 247 and a day later the road grader was pushing it all to the side of the road. All that's left is dirt and dangerous dust.

Go after the liars

NOW THAT it has been proven that Vice President Cheney's No. 1 man was a liar, I think it's about time we go up the chain of command and get the vice president and president. Impeachment is in order for the both of them. They are such a bunch of liars.

Western flights

THIS IS concerning the commuter airline. I want to know how you are supposed to connect with western flights by going to Cincinnati. I think people in Cape Girardeau are more concerned about that than the Procter & Gamble people flying to Cincinnati.

Out of the way

I THINK the proposal of doing away with St. Louis flights is appalling. Anyone who wants to travel south would have to go to Ohio to get to Memphis. I think it's a bad plan, and I'm not for it.

New airport name?

I HAVE an idea. Instead of the airport being named Cape Girardeau Regional Airport, it should be named Procter & Gamble Regional Airport. This is another example of our city council trying to please big companies and ignoring individuals.

Flooding fix

EVERY TIME I take the detour around the Broadway construction, I think about the previous roadwork at the Houck Stadium/Henderson Avenue area. Did someone from the city have the common sense to order the replacement of the old storm pipes with larger diameter ones while the area was exposed? I realize there would need to be some sort of adapter where the two sizes meet. But the result may be less of the awful street flooding that always occurs on Broadway.

Good system overall

ISN'T IT funny how quickly the liberal media can turn the opinions of the uninformed? Walter Reed Army Medical Center was and still is highly regarded as one of the finest care facilities in the world. It was covered in Newsweek in 2004, and was lauded over four pages for its treatment of our wounded warriors. The hospital was also identified in the Base Realignment and Closure Act, and will be closed down in 2008. One substandard building is one too many, but it does not mean the military health-care system is broken.

Nurses overworked

I WAS on hospital surgical floors six times in 2006 at several hospitals between here and St. Louis. The nurses are too overworked. They do the best they can, but there was only one for the entire floor. That's ridiculous.

High electric rates

THE PERSON expressing his wrath about the high electricity cost must be getting his power from Citizen's Electric. If you think it's bad in Cape Girardeau County, you ought to see what's going on in Perry and Ste. Genevieve counties.

Hub mistake

IF CAPE Girardeau Regional Airport goes ahead with the plan to switch to a Cincinnati hub, it will lose one loyal customer. There is no way I'm going to take the chance of getting stuck in Cincinnati trying to get home. I will resume driving to St. Louis or take the van service. I will miss the convenience. I think this is a big mistake.

Better connection

I'M EXCITED about the Cape Girardeau Regional Airport's connection with the Cincinnati hub. When we fly out West, we have to go to Cincinnati through the St. Louis airport anyway. So, this will make it much easier to go straight to Cincinnati and fly to Tucson. I'm excited about these changes.

Fawning praise

FIRST TJ Greaney pens a rant more suitable for an ultraliberal blog rather than our usually responsible Southeast Missourian. Now we get fawning praise for liberal environmental hand-wringers. Does this tiny fraction of our population really deserve any coverage in the paper? Hardly. Just because a writer is prolific doesn't mean his commentary is worthy of being published.
