Schools need God

THIS IS in response to the two callers who disapproved of God being a part of Central High's groundbreaking. It is high time they realized that leaving God out of schools has not worked. How many more children must die while at school before these two callers realize that people like themselves who are against displays of Christianity outside of the church walls are taking our country down. Christianity is a lifestyle that is to be practiced every minute of every day, not just for an hour on Sunday. Plenty of people like these callers want a religiously and morally sterile school. It doesn't happen. Students are offered drugs, alcohol and sex. Let's point them in a better direction that leads to God. I am proud that Central has Christian leaders who practice their faith every day. It is the only hope for our children.

Bunch of sore losers

I THINK some people are sore losers. Mel Carnahan's widow has won fair and square. Hillary Clinton won fair and square. As far as this paper printing that George W. was the winner, you really can jump your guns. This is a Republican paper, and everyone who reads Speak Out should demonstrate against that.

Bush voters left polls

IT SHOULD be noted that in Northwestern Florida people were informed by the news media that Al Gore had won the election before all counts had come in. After hearing this news, people waiting in line to vote for Bush left figuring it was a waste of time to vote since it was broadcast that the election was over. This irresponsibility by the news media cause Bush thousands of vote.

Ashcroft's example

IN AN example of extreme grace, poise and class. John Ashcroft conceded the U.S. Senate race for the good of the state and the good of the nation. It is interesting that Ashcroft had many legal, moral and ethical grounds by which to challenge the results of this election, yet he chose to take the high road. It is a shame that Al Gore has now lost not once, but twice the vote count in Florida. Yet Gore continues to fight through street theater and through media personnel to try and take over an election which he clearly has lost. It is time for Gore to do the right thing and follow Ashcroft's example.

Ultimate guarantee

THE SECOND Amendment is the recognition of the danger of standing armies. Its purpose is to recognize that every citizen has the right to keep and bear the same type of basic arms as a soldier in a modern military. Militia embodies all able-bodied men over the age of 16. Therefore a militia will always outnumber standing army by at least 20 to one. If this militia is armed with weapons similar to those used by the individuals in the standing army, it will be impossible for that standing army to inflict the will of a tyrannical government upon the people. The Second Amendment is the guarantee behind all the other articles and the Bill of Rights. It is the ultimate guarantee that citizens in the United States will remain free.

Get back to the truth

I FEEL it is time for the Democrats and the Republicans to unite against the news media. The news media are the ones who caused all this controversy. They were so wanting to get the big story out that couldn't wait until the election was completed. They had to start on their own with their prophecies. I think we should do away with exit polls. That would have stopped a lot of the controversy to start with. We need to get back to the truth even if takes passing some laws.

Clinton's hand in it

I AM a Democrat, and I can no longer sit back and watch this bunk go on. I can not believe the American people were so stupid as to not see Slick Willie's hand in this. Gore doesn't have the brains to pull off something like this. Bush has won the election. Let him have it. He will be a better man because of his morals than Gore will ever be.

Selfish reasons

I KNOW it is selfish, but I want Gore to win only because I want my grandkids to have a photograph of me smiling Trumanlike while holding up a historically valuable Nov. 8 copy of the Southeast Missourian with a larger than life "Bush wins" headline.

So what has changed?

I DON'T know what the big deal is. We haven't had a president for eight years. What is a couple more weeks going to matter?

Devil went to Florida

SOME YEARS ago Charlie Daniels, a country singer, put out a song, "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." I think now the devil went down to Florida, and I think he is having a heyday. This thing in Florida is like losing a baseball game in nine innings and demanding you play additional innings until you win.

Will of the people

IT SEEMS clear that Bush and his gang are more interested in gaining the power of the presidency for their special interests, however tainted that maybe. They are interested in allowing the electoral count to proceed to its constitutional logical conclusion and thus risk losing. Does he seriously think that, win or lose, voters will forget how he railed against the idea that someone else might take the program to court, and then he became the first one to do it? But his only goal is to stop a vote count and thwart the will of the people rather than open it up and allow the truth to be revealed.

States' rights

I THINK it is kind of funny that it is the Republicans who have gone to federal court in order to usurp the rights of Florida in regard to running its own election. This is the party that regularly criticizes federalism and says that we should leave individual states to govern themselves. What a joke.

Salute to veterans

I SURE was proud of the high school program for our veterans. It was great.
