WHEN I read Mrs. Herman's letter to the editor about planning and zoning, it helped clarify the issue. For me, it's not about whether my neighbor puts in a junkyard or a hog farm or a day care. At issue is a small group of people who may or may not share my values, telling me what I can and cannot do. Mrs. Herman's letter enlightened me to recognize that no group of people should tell me what I can or cannot do if it's legal.
IN REGARD to the stoplight technology that is being explored, I'd just like to say that it doesn't really matter to me whether it's a camera or a radar gun that catches people. Either way the law will be enforced. I think Cape Girardeau is one of the worst cities I've ever lived in in regard to people who run red lights, and I think this technology can only help improve the safety of our streets. I think it's interesting that a city council member would choose to write a column to express his views upon this and indicate that a better alternative would be adding police. That would only add expenses and cost to the city, and the police cannot be at every stoplight when the law is broken. I believe we have cameras in many, many places, and we ought to abide by the law. If we don't, then it's just too bad.
THERE ARE lies, and there are damn lies. When Al Gore said that he went to Texas with James Lee Witt and he really didn't, that was a lie. When George Bush said that he passed a patient's bill of rights and then tried to brag about it when he vetoed the first event and his threat of veto killed the second attempt, and the legislature passed a third version without his signature, now that's a damn lie on a very important matter. What is needed is for the presidential debates to be pre-recorded and then to have a truth squad of respected journalists check the facts, and at the end of each group of questions they should come out and correct any errors or lies made by each candidate.
I'M A student at R.O. Hawkins Junior High School in Jackson. Every day I have to through the growing pains there. I urge you to vote yes on the bond issue.
I WAS sorry to hear of the recent shooting which occurred in Indian Park. Any death is senseless but particularly one involving a shooting is hard for people to make sense of. That being said, I would also like to continue an examination of the shooting at Indian Park by saying that I realize that the shooting rose out of a squabble over a domino game back in September. Using gun-control logic, I think the only way we can stop similar shootings from occurring in the future is by having a five-day waiting period on the purchase of dominoes, licensing all domino owners and having a total ban on dominoes having more than five spots on them.
IT IS rather ironic that the Southeast Missourian can't seem to say enough kind things about Gov. Mel Carnahan. It is a shame it couldn't do that while the man was alive.
I WOULD like to comment on the installation of cameras at intersections, the issue is coming up. I would rather see us spend that money on additional traffic police officers. I think they would be able to do a lot better job, plus they would ticket the persons driving and not the owner of the car.
I WATCHED the video of Mel Carnahan's funeral and listened to his daughter speak. I hope everyone who can will vote for Carnahan one more time. Let's don't let the fire go out.
