I CAN see building a new church on Hopper Road. I have no problem with that, and I think they probably need a new church. I could even see the day-care facility. But do they honestly need a sports complex, an amphitheater and a lake? What is the point?
I WOULD like to comment on a letter to the editor about servicemen in the Korean War being often overlooked. I agree wholeheartedly. I served in World War II and also spent 1951-52 with the 24th Infantry Division in Korea. The fascinating thing to me is that there is so much attention placed on the Vietnam War that the Korean War is called the forgotten war. Yet in Korea in three years we had as many casualties, around 56,000, as they did in Vietnam in 10 years. We wound up with 8,200 missing in action in Korea, but in Vietnam they are still hollering about 2,100 missing in action. Korea was a vital, vicious war that seems to be overlooked by so many people, and it was one of the first wars we failed to win. That is what led us to the mess in Vietnam. If we had won in Korea, the world would be a different place.
I AM outraged by the story of the former minister whose sexual abuse conviction was overturned by the Missouri Court of Appeals on a technicality. We wonder why sexual crimes are the most underreported.
CONFUSING PARADOXES are all around us. On the one hand, President Bush agrees global warming is a serious problem that should be solved. On the other hand, he breaks a campaign promise and withdraws from the only treaty that could do something about it. On the one hand, state Sen. Peter Kinder argues for the sanctity of human life. On the other hand, he defends tobacco companies which happily report that tobacco saves public money since it kills people early, and he fights against environmental and health protection whenever possible. Are these folks stupid, or do they think we are?
FOR TOO long Peter Kinder was merciless in his criticism of Bill Clinton and the financial shenanigans of Whitewater, which pretty much turned out to be a Republican smear campaign. His current ethical lapse is all the more glaring for that track record. He's now bent on wielding what political power he has to further a power plant that would generate electricity to benefit Oklahoma at the expense of the residents and environment of Southeast Missouri.
A LOT of people are complaining that only the rich people are getting a tax refund. According to the form we got from the IRS, our check will be the lesser of $600, 5 percent of our taxable income or all the taxes we paid. Since my wife and I had a taxable income of almost $27,000 and paid almost $4,000 in taxes, we will get the full amount. If someone is getting only $11.75, then that is all the federal taxes that they paid. Actually I consider myself rich in many things. Money just wasn't one of them.
Just wanted to say that I think you guys do a great job covering the news in this area. I've read a lot of different newspapers in the towns I've lived, and this is the best. There's always something interesting. I really get a kick out of Speak Out too.
There was a response to my call about the Missourian's sketchy grading of Governor Holden. The caller who responded thought I was a SEMO student (which I am not) and that I missed that point that a student is only graded on things a professor chooses to grade. While that is correct in all aspects, my point was that the Missourian's choices of grading is akin to a professor making assignments but later ignoring all my A work and only counting the C's. There was no fair balance in the grading.
I was in the Scott City Post Office, and I'm still in shock over what the lady clerk was wearing. I thought the Postal Service had a dress code. I go there to mail items, not to order drinks from a Hooter's wannabe. She should be ashamed of herself looking like that in the workplace.
TO THE caller who wanted to know what century this is: It is the century of sin, and it is becoming a new millennium of sin. Good movies this year have been far and few between. There are few movies for the whole family to view. One can only hope "Planet of the Apes" will be a step up.
