Ready for Fuel Age

THE TIMES are changing, and there are three words you should know: fuel, cell and methanol. There have been recent breakthroughs in fuel-cell technology that would allow the use of methanol for fuel and to produce electricity that would run cars and provide for powers for homes. This could turn the country completely on its ear. Methanol can be made from thing such as garbage and wood chips. This would almost completely eliminate the need for foreign petroleum, and pollution would be almost completely eliminated. What is needed is a fast-track project like the Manhattan Project during World War II to move us to the Fuel Age more quickly.

Rewriting history

AS THE execution date for Timothy McVeigh nears, I notice a lot of attention has been brought on both the Oklahoma bombing and on the Branch Davidian situation in Waco, Texas, that prompted McVeigh to bomb the federal courthouse in Oklahoma City. It's been interesting to notice how people are changing the situation in Waco to suit their purposes. Several conservative writers and columnists have been saying Waco was persecution of religion. No, it wasn't. It was because these people were stockpiling weapons, including rocket launchers. It was someone breaking the law. That was not the government's fault, nor does it justify McVeigh's action.

Get better movies

I WOULD like to express my disappointment for a couple of movies that haven't come to the area and they're already out on video: "Quills" and "Billy Elliott." I would hope the theaters could still carry them, because some movies play better on big screen than at home. I don't understand why these movies are not here and garbage movies like "Freddie Got Fingered" are. I believe we deserve better movies at the theaters than the ones being shown in Cape.

Great day of prayer

I WAS so inspired. Each year our National Day of Prayer becomes more inspiring. What a demonstration of unity and oneness in Christ in Cape County and to know that it was going on all across the nation. The challenging message from dynamic pastor Leroy Sullivan from Kansas City, Kan., moved many to tears. The noon prayer gathering in Jackson on the courthouse lawn was beautiful. All that could separate -- politics, ethnicity, age difference, denominational lines -- seemed forgotten as the prayers were lifted. It was exciting to see so many youths present and hear some of them lifting up their prayers and dramatizing what America needs. Thanks to all of the local prayer teams who provided these outstanding worship services to bless us all.

Sock the pocketbook

PRESIDENT BUSH should immediately drop the speed limit to 60 mph on interstate highways and 55 mph on all others. That would save fuel and save hundreds of lives. He should raise the speeding fine to three times the current rate. The only way to stop a speeder is by hitting him in his pocketbook.

Gas guzzlers are culprits

THE CAUSE of these fuel crises is people stopped buying cars and bought SUVs. They cost twice the price of a car and use twice the amount of fuel. Suddenly the demand for fuel was greater than the supply. It will get worse. The automobile manufacturers were not satisfied with what they made off cars, and then they heavily promoted the sale of SUVs. The oil companies are pleased with this. Anyone who really needs an SUV or pickup for his business should go to the Department of Transportation for a permit to buy one of these gas guzzlers, and everyone else should buy a car to go to work in.

Republican dignity

WELL, THE apple didn't fall too far from tree. Bush's daughter already arrested for drinking. How about that, Republicans? That is dignity, don't you think.

Weed out communists

COMMUNISM DOESN'T believe in any value system except full dictatorial power and control over all the people. If the people dare to have any beliefs contrary to the communist dictators, they are either imprisoned or killed. America needs to weed these communists out who are trying to destroy our democracy and ruin America's young people.

Pride is showing

There are plenty of residential areas and businesses too that maintain their landscaping in such a way that makes the town shine as a great place to live. Thanks to those homeowners and business owners for doing a great job.

Just obey the law

IT'S HARD to believe someone with enough intelligence to dial the number of Speak Out would complain because the Cape police officer on the SEMO campus is driving a plain car with regular public license and arresting people for breaking the law. That's like some who complain about the police setting up a speed trap. If you don't break the law, you don't have anything to worry about. Let's quit complaining because you got caught doing something you shouldn't be doing.
