ON HOW the liberals try to fix things to be politically correct. Instead of calling people homeless, why not change the name to urban outdoorsmen?
THANKS TO the "Bible enlightenment" caller. I agree wholeheartedly. Someday people are going to learn just how dated the Bible is. It discriminates heavily based on gender and race, and its scientific observations are well out of date. If you want to live your life by thousands of obscure, odd and ancient rules, fine. But it is total reliance on the Bible that's holding our country back.
THE PROPONENTS of high-brow culture have had their way. The movie "Pollock" has come to Cape. However, before the advocates of elitist culture start congratulating themselves and indulging in mutual back slapping, they need to be reminded of something. Prior to World War II, the European nation with the most sophisticated cultural heritage was what became Nazi Germany. There is no correlation between a civilization steeped in an advanced cultural tradition and civilized behavior.
QUESTION: ARE there two or more Republican parties? Surely, there must be. There's the one some of the callers praise, glorify and exalt. Then there's the real one.
THIS IS in reference to deadbeat dads. If I didn't have wage withholding on my oldest child's father, I would never get any support from him. My child's father hasn't seen him in over nine years. I think it is only fair that a father pay support for his child. It's not the adults that suffer from this neglect. It's the children. A lot of men want people to feel sorry for them. If they are going to play, they will have to pay the consequences.
THIS IS a response to the letter regarding the housing situation at the SEMO campus. As a father of a freshman from St. Louis who is forced to live in the dorms, I have been shocked to hear the level of unprofessionalism that exists in the SEMO housing office. I have been told by the director of housing on at least two occasions that this is not Wal-Mart or Burger King: You can't always have it your way. He even went so far as to suggest that my daughter is on welfare because she has a scholarship that pays her housing fees. I cannot believe that this type of behavior is tolerated. The university is here to serve us. We are not there to serve them. I'll find a school that can meet our needs.
FINALLY. LISTENING to the city council, I heard a recognition of a pervasive problem: noise. I live on the west side of town. There is a house in my neighborhood with a minimum of 12 people at a time, mostly children. The noise of kids playing, boom boxes and auto music is creating neighborhood animosity. Where are the rights of the folks who choose to live quietly? I had to call the police to quiet a party of intoxicated adults. It took the police 25 minutes to arrive. The next time I will call the authorities and will again time their arrival. Who on the city council and who at the police department is listening to us?
THE SEED that Mike and Dianne Brown planted in their daughter will surely bear more fruit. Samantha L. Brown's column "Violence: Is it chicken or the egg?" was right on. She is another child who is a credit to her parents. I do not know the Browns, but they must have put their hearts and souls into the raising of Samantha. Wonderfully done.
IN REGARD to the Speak Out item "Too old to drive": I was walking my dog along Farmington. I saw a white car that contained at least six young people. The car was doing at least 70 mph. The driver didn't even stop at the stop sign. You talk about seniors driving fast? What about our young people? And where are the police?
