THE ONE thing Cape Girardeau needs is a place to eat with meeting rooms on the side for various organizations. We do not have a place where groups can meet and use a meeting room with the purchase of meals. Some groups have to drive to Jackson. That's the only place with this arrangement. I understand the Marquette Hotel is under consideration of a buyer again. How great a service to Cape if the first floor could be turned into such a place...

Meet, greet and eat

THE ONE thing Cape Girardeau needs is a place to eat with meeting rooms on the side for various organizations. Time to speak out

THE SENATE is fighting hard against campaign-finance reform. What a shocker. Under any other circumstances, what goes on in Washington would be considered bribery. Tired of big business dictating laws? Start writing letters to your representatives today. We are closer than ever to ending this criminal activity in Washington. Americans need to speak out before that freedom is sold to the highest bidder too.

Hair-length problems

THIS IS supposed to be the land of freedom, although you can't be free if you're a guy with long hair. Employers look at you and scoff. Police pull you over. And people think you're a bad person because of hair length. Jesus accepts us for who we are, not what we look like.

At least there's hope

LIBERALS, TAKE heart. There may be hope for Jon Rust. Although he appears to be a lost soul politically, his near deification of counterculture icons Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead show there's hope, at least on the cultural front. Hang tough, Jon. The pressure from the puritanical right to turn around and denounce these folks may become physical.

Support the issues

PEOPLE NEED to support the position a person takes on a particular issue. We must get past talking about our past president and vice president. This also applies to liberal and conservative TV and radio hosts. The issue is what we must support, not the parties or individuals. We are all liberal and conservative, No one is completely liberal or conservative.

Where did they go?

WHERE ARE all those wonderful, intelligent, upstanding Republicans who had all the answers to everything now that they are needed?

No communication

IT APPEARS Missouri's junior senator, Jean Carnahan, is too busy to communicate with her constituents. In the last 60 days I sent three e-mails to both of our U.S. senators. I received three answers from Sen. Christopher Bond and none from Carnahan. Neither of them know me, nor did they know if I was a Republican or Democrat. I don't know if Bond is busier than the junior senator. I know, however, now that he listens to his constituents. Has anyone else had difficulty getting Carnahan to communicate?

Showing contempt

CONTRARY TO what a Speak Out caller said, the community does understand Taste Lounge proprietor Michael Pryor's right not to stand during the pledge of allegiance. But for him to justify his act on the grounds of religious practice and say he feels like the biblical Daniel in the lion's den well, please give me a break. In my view, Pryor was much more motivated by a desire to show contempt for the city council as well as the larger community. For him to complain about laws which have allowed his joint to stay open much longer than deserved is mind-boggling.
