Oscar, not Walter

AFTER THE city council meeting regarding the Marquette Hotel, Tom Phillips said that the hotel was built by Walter Gerhardt. It was not built by Walter Gerhardt. It was built by his brother, Oscar Gerhardt. The reason I know this is because my dad was in construction and worked on it at the time.

Let's give it a rest

I'M ALMOST 70 years old and drive an eight-passenger SUV. I have no problems negotiating the roundabout. I can't see why an ambulance can't negotiate the turn. As far as semitrailer trucks are concerned, why do they have to use that street? There are plenty of other streets that can be used in case of emergency. That street was closed for months, and I don't know that any houses that burned down or lives that were lost because that street could not be used. I'm almost ready for another Clinton scandal so we've got something else to talk about.

Get in real world

I SAW David Limbaugh on a talk show on Fox. Seems like he and his brother need to get a life. Have they even bothered to look at the economy in the last eight years when the stock market was doing so well. Now look at us since Bush has taken office. I think they need to regroup and get their facts right before they start publishing books that are not absolutely true. Rush really needs to sit back and take note. All they can do is bash people. Why don't they get out there and work like a good, hard-working person and see what it's like to make $40,000 a year instead of millions of dollars for blowing their mouths off?

New technology is good

IT'S 2001, and still we don't have an intelligent society. Who would call in and suggest a cloned baby would be a devil baby? I'm sure people felt that way about test-tube babies. I feel confident that God allows a soul for every human being, and I'm not worried one bit about cloning. Technology seems to scare many people. I think the best thing about technology is that it can always be improved.

See no evil

I SEE the "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" person has called in thinking that if the local media doesn't report it that somehow there won't be any school shootings. So far, we've been blessed not to have any school shootings locally, but somehow if you just don't know about it, it will just go away.

Cut out the fear

I'M GETTING sick and tired of all this garbage about how consumer spending declined two-tenths of 1 percent in February. To put this in context: For the average family in Missouri, this amounts to less than $5 per month. So quit trying to scare the country into a recession. As my childhood hero Franklin Roosevelt said, "We have nothing to fear but fear itself."

Pay for your mistakes

MY CALL is in response to the person complaining about the banks penalizing teen-agers for errors in their checking accounts. It's not just teen-agers. It happens to everybody. They're not discriminating. You can buy a calculator for $2 or $3. There's no need for those mistakes. You pay for your mistakes. It's just the way society is.

It's on the house

I THINK the city council members who voted to renew the Taste Lounge's liquor license should be made to spend every Friday and Saturday night there until June. Maybe they would get smart.

It's just an excuse

IT'S AGAINST the Taste Lounge owner's religion to stand at the pledge of allegiance to the flag, yet it's OK to run a bar to degrade and ruin people's lives with alcohol. I'm afraid his religion is an excuse to do anything he wants with no morals, values or decency.

Another ship

THE UNFORTUNATE accident involving the USS Greeneville was just that -- an accident. I'm upset at the sight of one of our senior admirals bowing and scraping to people who have never apologized for their many atrocities. If the Japanese want to raise a ship, we have one in Pearl Harbor called the Arizona with several hundred Americans entombed on it. They won't have trouble finding it. It's right where they left it.
