IT'S ENTERTAINING to see that David Limbaugh has been spending his time preoccupied with the corruption of the Clinton White House. To be corruption consistent, he should now give equal time to the vastly greater depths of corruption and conspiracy behind the bloodless coup that put George W. Bush in the White House. This is an evil beyond anything Bill Clinton ever dreamed of.
I ALWAYS enjoy Alan Journet's letters to the editor, especially after having all the Southeast Missourian's right-wing garbage stuffed down my throat. It's good to know that someone else has the same ideas I do.
THERE'S BEEN quite a bit of comment about these payday-loan places where you get cash for high interest. It can be a help to people. What's the difference between that and these banks where, if you're a quarter short in your checking account, they'll charge you $20? One's just as big a loan shark as the other, only banks pretend they're legitimate.
THANK GOD for Louisiana. If it wasn't for them, Missouri would have the worst roads in the country. You can't have good roads for cheap. Missouri spends about half as much per mile as the average state. You can't have the silliness like the Hancock Amendment and good roads, too. Our new governor has tried to get more money for the roads, and people are complaining loudly. How bad will the roads have to get before Missourians are ready to spend the money to bring them up a couple of notches above Louisiana?
I HOPE the city doesn't ask the taxpayers for any more money for road work if they're going to use it for things like this roundabout. What a waste. I'd like to know whose idea this was.
WHERE, OH where, were the music lovers of Cape Girardeau on Tuesday evening? The university orchestra had a superb performance, and the crowd was very small. The students who soloed Amy Arnold, Matt Martin, Erin Mirly, and Tyson Wunderlich were such a pleasure to listen to. We need to support the beautiful music that is being made by our talented citizens.
I FINALLY got to drive around the roundabout. I've driven in other countries and the roundabouts operate real well. The engineer who designed this one here in Cape needs to go back to engineering school. I could've done a better job engineering this one than he did.
WELL, MY Republican paragons of truth and virtue, the time has come for you to turn your attention to one of your own. In September, during the campaign, son Bush said he would go even further than Al Gore in controlling carbon dioxide emissions. As late as a couple of weeks ago, Christine Todd Whitman said the administration would increase the control of these emissions. In typical Bush fashion, on Tuesday, he wrote a letter to four Republican senators saying he did not want the government to impose mandatory reductions for power plants. Guess who'd be president now if Bush had said in October what he said this week? Most people don't want air pollution and global warming.
THERE HAVE been some comments in Speak Out about how St. Louis does not need a new baseball stadium. I totally disagree. Our family took a tour of the existing facility back in July, and the infrastructure of Busch Stadium is horrible. Water pipes were leaking, and the concrete was cracked and chipping off. The home and visitors locker rooms looked like something out of a minor league team's facility. The tour guide said they do their best to keep the field looking nice, because of the constant television exposure the Cardinals receive. St. Louis will have the same problem that Three Rivers Stadium saw. It will become more costly to do repairs to the structure than to build a new facility.
AS I was sitting here reading the article about how the Cardinals need a new stadium, I had to laugh. A bunch of millionaires who pay millions to a bunch of crybaby millionaires want my tax money to build them a new ballpark so they can make more millions. I did some figuring. For me to take my family of four to a ball game and sit in OK seats, get something to eat and maybe a souvenir for the kids will cost me around $150. I hope people are not that blind and tell these millionaire owners that they can build it themselves or pack their bags. There are a lot more important things to spend tax money on than this, like education and roads for starters. Come on people, wake up.
I AGREE with SEMO's athletic director that the recent arrest of a couple of SEMO athletes is a relatively minor matter, a blip on the radar screen if you will. Therefore, I think it is extremely premature to panic and implement a public relations offensive by changing the name of the team from the SEMO Indians to the SEMO Innocents.
I DO not encourage the use of drugs to anyone. That is a personal choice. If one makes that personal choice, I suggest sticking to the drugs found in the natural pool. My definition of drugs is any substance taken into the body other than water or food which causes a physiological or psychological change. I do not condone the use of any drug by any minor. I detest the fact that through ill-focused policy, our own government has created a profitable market for illegal drug trafficking rather than focusing on the violent offenders. I have two sons of my own and take the responsibility to ensure, as a parent, that my boys have the potential to approach the subject of drugs with responsibility and maturity. If they make the personal choice of using marijuana as adults, I hope they do so being fully aware of their surroundings and areas of responsibility.
