Wonderful youths

PRAISE THE youth. On March 4 I attended our church service at the First General Baptist Church of Jackson. What a blessing. The youths led the service. They gave a beautiful, enlightening service and testimony through their performance. It was great to see and hear the good they had done. I left the service with a wonderful feeling. The group and leaders in February made a trip to Mississippi to perform for a citywide youth campaign, but it ended up being countywide. It was a huge success. These youth and leaders deserve a lot of praise for their work. As we know, time is running short until the Lord shall return. We need a lot of change. It seems these kids are on the right track. They could put many of us adults to shame. God bless these youths. Leaders, the church and the parents deserve credit too. Thanks. It was great.

No character awards

AS THE NAACP continues to pour praise and awards on former President Clinton, do any of the awards mention truth, moral values or character.? Your character or conduct doesn't seem to matter.

A great addition

I THINK the roundabout on Gordonville road is neat and a great design. I only wish I had it on my street or in my neighborhood. Of course, if you're hell-bent to get somewhere, it will slow you down, so take an alternate route. I think it is a beautiful addition to our city, and I congratulate anybody who had anything to do with it -- the idea, the design or the labor.

Only at tax time

TO THE person who called in about the junkyard on Main street: If you think this area looks bad, you should see the junkyard on North Spanish street between Fifth and Johnson streets. The city has been told about this at least three times in the last two years. I agree with you. Red Star is the forgotten district of Cape -- until it is time to send out property tax bills. Then we are well-remembered.

Trickle down

TO THE person who's bashing Dick Gephart's wanting to give money back to all the American people, I think he's got his wires crossed. Isn't it George Bush who wants to be all heart and give the taxpayers their money back? Gephart just wants to give exemptions to the taxpayers who are the hard-working average and poor people. Bush just wants to give the wealthy a break because he thinks it will help trickle down the economy. That's Republican philosophy.

Get some instruction

THOSE WHO are having trouble navigating the roundabout should be required to retake their drivers' tests. It works fine.

Fire truck gets stuck

THIS ENTERTAINMENT was brought to us by the roundabout at St. Francis. It was very interesting watching a fire truck negotiate through there and get stuck. I suggest the city council and city engineers and the genius who designed the roundabout call the fire chief in Cape Girardeau and discuss exactly how the trucks are supposed to get through there in case of an emergency.

Fits perfectly

I AM designing and building a Ken and Barbie miniature village. This week I had an exciting encounter with the new roundabout. I am now wondering if the Cape Girardeau engineers will give me a copy of the plans. Indeed, I believe I can use their exact measurements for my project.

Ambulance worries

I JUST want to put my two cents in about the roundabout. I agree with the caller who said it was awful and terrible. I hope I never have to be in an ambulance that has to go around that thing. I think I'd die.

All that purple

I THINK a mulberry bush is the perfect plant for the center of the new roundabout.

Education objectives

AS PRODUCTS of a failing public school system, Americans are losing the commonsense skepticism toward scientific claims that animates the scientific method itself. And one of the reasons for this is the slow but steady degradation of our educational system. Outcome-based education, cooperative learning and maximization of self-esteem are replacing reading, writing and arithmetic as the goals of education. Though the evidence of this trend is vast and compelling. At the state level, many high school competency exams are written at an eighth grade level. And coloring for credit in elementary-level math classes is fairly common. Is it any wonder that so many of the kids who graduate from high school and enter the work force are unable to add in their heads or make correct change, or arrive at college incapable of solving the simplest equations?

Suggested punishment

I'VE GOT a long-bed Ford pickup. I went around the roundabout twice. It was really difficult for my pickup to get around this thing. What I'd like to do is have the city to take the fire department's shortest fire truck and try to make it around there without going off into the mud or over the decorative bricks in the middle. It's a fiasco. Whoever's responsible for drawing that up and getting that passed by the city council and spending our taxpayers' money foolishly should have their rear end kicked.
