I KNEW it was going to happen. As soon as the Democrats got out of office, the Rams did not repeat. I knew this was going to happen.
IF PEOPLE think things have been so great the past eight years, I'd like to know where it is. Everything you can name has gone up. If the economy is so good, how come we got the largest Social Security cost-of-living increase in a decade? Utility bills is doubled from last year. Drugs went up. Everything imaginable has raised in price. So how can they figure that we're better off ?
TO THE person who said our children aren't paying his Social Security and he hoped we get a national health program: This person must not be checking his facts. The average person draws everything he's put into Social Security in just three years. We've got a terrible load we're willing to put on our children and grandchildren. It's ridiculous. Where is it written that when you reach a certain age you have a right to get someone else's money, have the government take someone else's money away and give it to you? The figures don't lie. Social Security has become a welfare program. You get much more than you paid in, and we are giving the bill to our children and grand children. As far as the socialized medicine goes, why do you think the Canadians and the Germans and the French come to America? If you were going into a state clinic over there, you might have to wait six months to get in. I know people from Canada who sneak down on their vacation and couldn't even tell the Canadian government when they went back that they got medical help down here. The wealthy people get their health care. It'll be people like this caller who'll be sitting in a clinic getting no help at all.
THIS GOES out to sportswriter Bob Miller, who two years ago called for the small schools to withdraw from the U High Christmas Tournament. Let's recall. Scott City was champion last year. Advance was champion this year.
I WAS disturbed by three things in Speak Out. If I wanted the political viewpoint of the Post-Dispatch, I would buy that paper. I suggest the Speak Out caller do the same and leave my Southeast Missourian alone, as I agree with its political viewpoint. Another thing: At least the people who raised the money for the Republican campaign didn't go to China for illegal money and have to get it back. There also were the White House coffees, and the Lincoln Bedroom too, and the California nuns with money. Also, so we should all prepare for a right-wing reign of terror, as John Ashcroft may become attorney general? People are turned off by extreme exaggeration, and it doesn't change their minds. Ashcroft would have to change a lot to be Janet Reno in the Waco, Wyoming, and Elian Gonzalez tragedies.
THANK YOU, Dorothy Wolf of Chaffee. Your poem, "Lord, Change Me," in TBY is wonderful. My only New Year's resolution this year is to be happy and to try to make others happy. Your poem helps a lot. Thank you so much.
THE CASES of Spencer Abraham and John Ashcroft seem to show that a good way to get a prestigious presidential cabinet appointment is to run for the U.S. Senate and lose.
TO THE 94-year-old lady who said she finally saw what the Republicans are about, I see what the Democrats are about. That Great Depression was prolonged by Franklin Roosevelt by putting a high tax rate on people. He locked the country up with rules and regulations. That's what Clinton did. Thirty thousand regulations in the last eight years. Do you remember Pearl Harbor, where the president knew American boys was going to get killed, and he let the Japanese bomb us knowing that? Remember a thing called the Vietnam War, where the Democrats got us into a bloody war there and never intended to win it? Do you remember that every war we've ever had has been fought by the Democrats? Do you remember a thing called Waco? Remember a thing called Yugoslavia and cluster bombings? Don't curse Reagan when you have a full mouth. We're in a recession now with all kinds of rules and high taxes.
I'VE BEEN reading Speak Out for about four years regarding President Clinton being a pervert. I want you people to wake up and realize that, while I don't approve of it and it's not my way, that 90 percent of your kids are engaging in this type of sexual activity. I think anybody who thinks different just doesn't know what's going on in the world.
MOST CITY residents are proud of our police department. However, a few disgruntled citizens usually impose their gripes and disdain for our law enforcement. I admire these people who serve and protect our community. They are underpaid, understaffed and under-equipped. Think how it would be without police service or protection. I'd like to thank them and their families for their dedication. Most people, I'm sure, respect and honor them as I do.
