Dream big

MAKE things happen in your life. Do not let life happen to you. Dream a dream. Make a plan to realize that dream, and execute the plan. Hopelessness is only a state of mind and can be overcome. Just the fact that we can dream a dream justifies the pursuit of that dream. While you are at it, dream big. The world will welcome heroes and champions. I welcome dreamers into my life, and I wish them all they desire.

Bring back recess

IF everyone is so concerned about childhood obesity, one simple solution would be to bring back recess. It's not only essential for the body, but also for the mind.

South side

THIS is in regard to the homeless shelter on South Sprigg Street. What was wrong with having the homeless shelter on Broadway? Why does Cape Girardeau stick everything it doesn't want to see on the south side of town? Come on, south side, wake up.

THE news media keep talking about the shutdown of the federal government for four days costing $100 million a day. I would think closing Congress so it can't spend money would save $100 million a day. Something's all screwed up, and I don't think it's my thinking.

Just normal

I am bald-headed white guy. I've had only one wife, and she is my only sexual preference. I go to church because I believe there really is a God. I'm wondering if this makes me a little peculiar, or am I just watching too much TV?

Get a casino

I was just reading the "No casinos" comment in Speak Out. I know that a lot of money is spent in casinos, money probably that people don't have to spend, but it isn't all that bad. I'm 67 years old, and I go to a casino once in a while. It would be nice to have one in our area without having to go to the other towns. Come on, let's get a casino.

Face the music

I would like to comment about four the Southeast Missouri State University student athletes who were charged in connection with an off-campus assault. Why on earth would Southeast Missouri State University give scholarships to football players who have a record and have been in trouble with the law? Just because you play sports and you're an athlete does not give you the right to break the law. These students have to face up to what they done.
