AT least twice a week there are no parking spaces available in the front of the Jackson Post Office. But when you go in and there is only one customer in the lobby. Who is using the post office parking lot?
AL Gore told the U.N. climate conference that new data suggest the Arctic polar ice cap may disappear in the summertime as soon as five to seven years from now. Gore knows that the Arctic ice has gained in size the last two years. And he knows he's got to ramp up the fear factor. The best way to do that is to come up with a scary prediction.
A recent comment erroneously stated that President Obama is paying for our wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Show me where Obama has done such a thing. He's only talked about a war tax, but it hasn't been enacted. In addition, the defense authorizations Obama signed were full of pork projects and liberal social programs that had nothing to do with the troops.
WHAT are the powers that be thinking by bringing terrorists from Gitmo onto our American soil and putting them into prison in Illinois? I say ship them back to their homeland.
I'M already paying for the Afghanistan war. I've got two grandsons there. I don't want my grandsons fighting to support a commander in chief who has no experience. He's going to get a bunch of boys killed, and the blood is going to be on the hands of the people who supported President Obama. I wish they could all go to the front lines.
I was at the store and got a few groceries. When I was ready to pay for my groceries, I couldn't find my debit card. This wonderful woman, she was an angel, paid for my groceries. I want to thank her. She said, "Thank God," and I did.
WHEN I heard President Obama's acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize, I wanted to crawl under a rock. Thank you, Dr. Wayne Bowen, so much for saying what he should have said. I appreciate it. You made my morning.
Regarding All Good Grill's efforts to get a vending license in public parking lots: The major compliance necessary to operate an outdoor food service in Cape Girardeau was not researched by the operators. They must do their cooking within a screened area. They must have hot water for cleaning. Do they have invoices available showing where the meats were purchased? The county health department inspects the cooking area at every location. Is the health department going to have an inspector available every night they fire up the grill? The city council is not complying with city and county policy for operating food vendors outside a permanent building. The All Good Grill needs to call Charlotte Craig at the public health department before selling one more hot dog.
LET me see if I've got this straight. In Cape Girardeau County I can steal from somebody and, if I get caught, all I have to do is make restitution and I get off scot-free?
REGARDING the plan by the Arts Council of Southeast Missouri to ask artists to display their artwork in vacant store buildings: I respect the arts council's effort to promote the arts, but visual artists are not decorators. Requesting to place their artwork in vacant store windows is a bad idea. There have been so many windows broken downtown. What about vandalism, theft, insurance, direct light and climate control? These considerations make this proposal beyond good judgment. I was not surprised this request had received only one application from an artist and no building owners had signed on. While the concept may have been well-intended, it is simply a bad idea.
SOAP operas have gotten so bad. There are kids watching some of these programs. The soaps tell kids step by step how to do something like how to make meth. When are we going to wake up?
SOME family members were having a discussion about the importance of band in school. One man said band isn't as important as football. Three mothers jumped in and said band is just as important, it's a wonderful program. It's like an athletic program, those kids put up with just as much. Then the man said something that really made me stop and think. He said, rain or shine, everything short of lightning, those football players are out on the field. Jackson Band Festival was canceled because of rain. Music programs need to remember they're there to support and entertain the fans during halftime. That's it.
