Dig some more

I'M GLAD to see the Missourian publish the facts on the federal courthouse and all the buildings the government is spending money on. I think you should go farther. You should get hold of our two senators and our representative to see if we can't block this. I think the Social Security office can stay in the federal building on Broadway and save the rent expense. If you don't follow up on it, then you're not doing a complete job.

Quiet, peaceful place

I ENJOYED reading the story about Conception Abbey. My husband went to high school there for one year, and we visited there several times. It really is a quiet, peaceful place to enjoy.

Maid's job to clean

WHEN I go to a hotel, I expect a maid will clean up after me. That's what a maid does. I don't leave trash, but I also don't clean.

Reduce consumption

IT IS time to reduce highway speed limits. Most vehicles will get 10 percent better gas mileage if highway speeds are reduced 10 mph. We are wasting a diminishing resource by driving 70 mph. Why won't the politicians go out on a limb and drop the speed limit to 60 mph? It seems like a no-brainer to me. Oil is pushing $100 a barrel, and gasoline could hit $4 by summer. We have to reduce consumption.

Brain man

DAVID LIMBAUGH is a Gene Lyons with a brain.

Winning swimmers

CONGRATULATIONS TO the Central High School swimmers on winning their conference meet, even without having a home pool for practices most of the season. Good luck at the state championship this weekend.

Fingers pointing

IF A Democratic politician would ever run on the truth, it would surprise the heck out of me. Of course, the same goes for the Republicans. My advice to both parties: When you point your finger at someone, you have three fingers pointing back at you.

Good intentions

THE MAYOR and city council have done a disservice to Cape Girardeau by deeming a church's food sales as a ministry. Fortunately, we are dealing with a Christian church with good intentions. However, by setting a precedent such as this, we are uncertain as to what our future holds. Religions and ministries are diverse. Let us all hope all future ministries will be with good intentions.

Check your flags

AS WE have now set back clocks and checked the batteries in the smoke detectors, I think it is a good time for individuals and companies to check their flags. I have seen a lot of torn and tattered flags flying in the area. Show your pride.
