I WOULD like to commend the Franklin Elementary School principal for going ahead with plans for Halloween at the school. I am sick and tired of this country catering to the minority. Kudos to Mrs. Dunham.
THERE'S A great place to visit in Cape Girardeau. It's like a mini St. Louis Science Center without the drive. It doesn't take as much time to get through it, but it's a great place. It's at the Southeast Missouri State University campus in Memorial Hall. Everyone should try to come out and enjoy it. It doesn't cost anything. It's great for children. I really enjoyed it, and I think everybody else will. I think it's a great thing that the university has brought to us.
BEFORE WE attended the Shaolin Warriors performance at the River Campus, which was excellent, we went to the Crisp Museum. What a lovely addition to Cape Girardeau. The young student worker at the reception desk was a wonderful joy to see at the university. He knew all of his information. We will be returning to have a tour. God bless Southeast Missouri State University. What a wonderful job. Keep up the good work and hiring of such good people.
I'D JUST like to offer my opinion on the Billy Joe Shaver concert. Promotional material said it started at 4 p.m. A number of bands were playing. I assumed they would play and Billy Joe would come on at an reasonable hour. I realized that about two hours later that he wasn't going to play until 11 p.m. Unfortunately, I didn't see the concert, and there were many others who didn't. Let's tell people what's going on before they pay their money and attend a show that they don't end up seeing at all.
THIS LAST weekend, my clocks and VCR all went to standard time. I had to reset all of them. Next week, when the time changes again, I will have to set them again. This is a mess just for one week. What good has it done? Why don't they leave things the way they are?
I WANT to thank Jackson's former mayor Paul Sander, the board of aldermen he served with and any other person involved with securing the funds for our Jackson recreational trail system. I counted 23 middle school children walking on the trail from the middle school recently, and all ages of people were using these trails this summer. I can't walk on them anymore, but I enjoy seeing the other people using them. It's so much safer for the people and good for their health.
CONGRATULATIONS TO Sandy and Larry Potts for all their hard work and dedication to Project Kitty City. I am so grateful for people like them. They make the world a better place.
THRIVE IS an initiative the public could rally around to reduce high school dropout rates. Research done by the Search Institute shows that the higher the number of developmental assets a child has, the more likely he will make healthy decisions, do well in school, value diversity and exhibit leadership. The lower the number of developmental assets at child has, the more likely he will engage in risky behaviors like alcohol and drug use, violence and early sexual behavior. THRIVE is a community youth development initiative that is working to educate the community on the benefit of the 40 developmental assets. For more information about THRIVE or the 40 developmental Assets, call the Caring Council at 651-3747.
