Mesmerized audience

THE TRANS-SIBERIAN Or-chestra concert was the best I've ever been to, and I've been to well over a hundred concerts. The lighting, the musicians, the whole package were just incredible. We were very honored that the group came to Cape Girardeau, and we hope it comes back again. If you missed it, try to take them in the next time. It was really something to look around the Show Me Center packed with people during the performance and see that hardly anyone was getting up at all because they were mesmerized by the whole experience.

Whining by teacher

THIS IS in response to "Back with a smile." A Cape Girardeau teacher whined in Speak Out about being a teacher. I doubt that he or she spends $6,000 a year on students. Does anyone believe that all parents do not love their children? Does his or her job really require that 60 percent of free time be spent on students? Do you really think a teacher makes less than someone flipping hamburgers? This is the reason people do not respect whining educators. Teachers should be respected and admired if they earn it. Remember: nine months a year, all holidays off and never a weekend worked if they choose not to. Sounds like a pretty good gig to me. Teachers know exactly what they're getting into when they enter the profession. After they receive tenure it takes an act of Congress to remove them no matter how horrible they are. In conclusion, I will never vote yes on a bond issue as long as people like this spout their propaganda. I'm a person who loves my child, works 12 months a year, 60-plus hours a week -- sometimes on Saturday -- just to be able to pay the taxes that pay teacher salaries.

Praise for garbage man

HOW DARE someone say you can't compare a garbage collector to a police officer. That's like saying a garbage collector isn't as good. I'm very proud of the job my garbage collector does every week. Thank goodness for the humble garbage man.

Foreign impact

TO THE caller who's so proud of his Japanese car: I hope he takes time to read the article in Saturday's Missourian about Alan Greenspan's concern about imports from other countries and the effect that's going to have on our economy through the loss of jobs. We need to buy American.

A little respect

I WAS married to a police officer for 14 years. Yes, they do their jobs. Yes, they take risks every day. But I also have family members who pick up garbage in the rain, snow, sleet and 100-degree weather. Why don't they get thanks? Why don't they get a raise? They work just as hard as any department in Cape Girardeau, including the police. Give the garbage people a little respect. Give them their raises.

Time to look elsewhere

THESE CITY employees who feel like they've gone as far as they can go in the city should be looking for something better. I've always done that to try to improve my income.

Paying activity fees

I'M A student at Central High School. I think it's outrageous that I had to pay $100 in activities fees this year when the school district obviously believes it has all this money to throw away looking for a new superintendent. Superintendents in Cape Girardeau stay for an average of three years. What is wrong with the school board that it can't keep its mind made up for more than three years? This whole thing is preposterous. I don't think I should have to pay for my sports and clubs if they can spend this much money just looking for a superintendent.

Strong sewer smell

AT THE corner of Independence and Main streets the sewer smell is so strong you can barely stand it. How do you expect to promote Old Town Cape when the sewer smell is that strong? Can someone find out while the sewer is always stinking at that intersection?
