‘Hamlet' production

I went to see "Hamlet" at the River Campus on Nov. 9, and I must say that Andrew Gehrlein's performance as Hamlet was exceptional. I have seen this play performed at The Globe in London, and Andrew's performance, if not exceeds, definitely rivals that production.

Jensen column

CURMUDGEONLY columnist Mike Jensen recently wrote that the Occupy protesters don't understand how capitalism works. I beg to differ. They understand quite well what happens when capitalism is unfettered and completely free of having to play by the rules. Jensen might not have been financially affected by the Great Recession or made money betting that big banks and other institutions would fail, but many of us were virtually wiped out.

Hawk problem

HAS anyone noticed the large population of hawks in the city limits? I came home to one on my driveway killing a squirrel. I understand this is becoming a problem.

Bloomfield Road

I was disappointed to read the Bloomfield Road project will be delayed and certainly by more than the one month the article noted. The Benton Hill road section started Sept. 21 and was to be done in six weeks. This is a huge inconvenience to those of us who live on this road and very poor planning by the city. The weather has been good, and the only reason for the delay is the rush to spend this money to pave the city of Cape Girardeau. I hope in the future we will spend more time planning and less time explaining why we missed our target.

Presidential candidates

IF the presidential election of 2012 is, according to Newt Gingrich, the most important presidential election since 1860, then we are, based on the quality of the candidates, in deep, deep trouble.

Comment on coaches

THAT a Speak Out caller would try to exploit the inspiring David Freese story to take a cheap shot at high school baseball coaches is disgusting beyond description and should result in the complainant placing himself on the rapidly growing list of retired Speak Out callers.

Penn State

JOE Paterno had done the right thing. He should not have been fired. He went to his superiors and told them. They did not do their part. The president as well as the board should all be replaced and held accountable. If an employee saw another employee stealing money from a customer or company and went to the boss or owner, they should not be held responsible for an arrest to be made. They have done their job. Joe had done that. It wasn't his responsibility to report to the police. He was passing on information from what he had been told by someone else.

How Wall Street works

NEWT Gingrich said in a recent debate that many people don't understand how Wall Street works. He's correct. Sadly, many people think Wall Street was the victim rather than the cause of the Great Recession.

Playing race card

I know it probably won't be effective, but I still feel obligated to plead with David Limbaugh to quit playing the race card against Democrats. Please, Mr. Limbaugh, please.

Occupy protests

A Speak Out orator spewed venom at the Occupy protests, saying they should be protesting government waste and corruption. They are. However, they are also protesting private corruption, greed and unregulated risk taking that led to the 2008 meltdown and the disastrous consequences that continue to this day.
