Fooling people

YOU can't fool all the people all the time. Unfortunately, nowadays, you can fool enough of the people enough of the time.

Missing the point

DEMOCRATS are still missing the point. We don't want to work with them. We have the House, and now we want them out of the Senate and the White House.

Help the U.S.

I understand that the Haitians are suffering after their recent earthquake and other problems, but why are we so quick as a country to help other countries and not our own people? We still have displaced people as a result of Hurricane Katrina.

Stay home

IT is a shame what the president has spent on his trip to India when we have enough troubles at home that he and Congress should be taking care of first. We are going broke, America. We have people losing their jobs and homes. Enough is enough.

Working with GOP

PRESIDENT Obama shoved his radical agenda down the American citizens' throats for the last two years. It is funny to watch the president now have to attempt to work with Republicans instead of shunning them.

SEMO's benefits

PAID medical coverage is part of the total salary offering of many jobs. The base salary at Southeast Missouri State University is so uncompetitive that the loss in benefits makes it that much worse. Visit the Chronicle of Higher Education and view the mean salaries of faculty across the country at similar institutions. Southeast is in the lower-third nationally.

Gambling vs. smoking

SOME argue that the proposed casino in Cape Girardeau would unfairly take advantage of lower income people. I work with low-income individuals and notice that the majority smoke. One might argue that the high taxes on cigarettes is a regressive tax. Yet we do not feel the need to make cigarettes illegal.

Obama's courage

KNOWING that it would cost him dearly in the midterm elections, I would like to thank President Obama for his extraordinary and, as time will tell, successful effort to save American capitalism. Our president is a true profile in courage.

Judgment and empathy

HEALTH care workers: Judgment is not the definition of empathy.

Great website design

I do not live in Southeast Missouri, but I really enjoy the Southeast Missourian website. It is one of better pages I have ever visited. I have e-mailed our local Virginia Beach paper several times asking them to view your page. It's put together well and easy to use.

Journet letter

THANK you, Alan Journet, for saying what I couldn't. It has been obvious for many years that the U.S. no longer has anything near a representative form of government. Is the U.S. in the grips of mass blindness, ignorance and insanity?

Pet safety

IN response the person who is concerned with cats not on a leash or at home, the pet-owner liability website says, "Every year more than 4.7 million Americans are bitten by dogs, enough for some health organizations to classify dog bites as an epidemic." What it comes down to is that dogs will harm people, and many times injuries result and require medical attention. How many times has a cat attacked a person?

Fulfill your promise

THE Republicans are already going back on their campaign promise of doing away with earmarks. This just goes to show how much they have lied to the American public the past two years.
