THANK you for printing the guest column from Dr. Ron Rosati recently in the newspaper. Ron has a good idea about increasing the acceptability of bicycles on the university campus and Cape Girardeau. And notice how he makes his argument. He's always optimistic. He's always complimenting people. He doesn't cut anyone down or talk about the negatives. He's optimistic and talks about making things better. I could learn from Dr. Ron. Maybe I should.
I see a lot of people riding their bicycles when it's dark outside and they're in dark clothing. You should wear some kind of reflective clothing or white. I almost hit somebody one time, except they had white socks on. If it hadn't been for the white socks, I wouldn't have seen them.
THE government does not own and operate the Postal Service. The Postal Service is not relying on taxpayers to bail it out, nor does it want a bailout. The Postal Service does not receive any taxpayer dollars at all. The only revenue it gets is through the sale of stamps and postal products. It never has received one cent of taxpayer money.
AS I read about the consideration for tearing down another building on Broadway, I realize that time and circumstances cause dramatic changes. This is why most of the buildings on Commercial Street in Cairo have been removed. This brings up an idea for our former City of Roses. Let's resurrect an old song for our city theme song, "Pave paradise, put in a parking lot."
SEMO spent a lot of money on transportation for the football team and coaches. With that money, parking prices could have been lowered for the students that are attending school there.
THE caller is wrong about leaving politicians out of education. If the educators were doing their jobs, then politicians wouldn't need to be making any input because it would be ideal. The problem is that George W. Bush came up with No Child Left Behind because there are children being left behind in education. Many times the standards are just not high enough.
I can't understand why the Cape Girardeau City Council would approve low-income housing to be built to try to attract the lower socioeconomic family into town. We need people who are working and have good jobs and good income to help the tax base in this community. Attracting lower income socioeconomic households to Cape Girardeau is not conducive to a strong, vibrant economy.
CAN someone from the city please come out and pick up the trash that is laying between the Cape Rock Drive and Lexington Avenue intersection out to Snake Hill? What an eyesore this is.
I have never been in the military, but I am a very patriotic American who appreciates the military. I also appreciate our national anthem. I agree with the person who called in and said people should sing it as it was written, not as your personal version.
CONGRATULATIONS, Megan and Lauren, for being such good team players. Even though you didn't get to play, you were good sports to stick it out and not be quitters. Your attitude shows you can handle adversity with grace. You'll go far. You're an inspiration for us parents as well as the players. Keep it up, girls.
I think it's going to be great when the gambling casino is done, and the hotel they're going to build is going to be great. You're going to have a room that overlooks the Mississippi River and it's going to be nice. The problem is, why would anyone want to go downtown to the businesses? You people downtown who thought they're going to give you business, who is going to walk four or five blocks from the gambling casino after you've had five or six beers?
BARACK Obama is going around the country talking about passing this jobs bill. I don't know how much it's going to cost, but remember when he wanted that other jobs bill, he said we had to pass that jobs bill and unemployment wouldn't go up past 8 percent. It's up to 9.1 percent now, and he's wanting to pass another jobs bill. Why don't the reporters ask him, "Well, it didn't work the first time. Why is it going to work this time?"
REPUBLICANS, look at the truth. The Wall Street protesters are tired of your games of protecting the rich and big corporations. You try to say that isn't what they are protesting, but you are wrong. Obama will be re-elected.
COLUMNIST George Will is rightly worried. Republican-controlled state legislatures are starting to mess around with the allocation of electoral votes. This is all perfectly constitutional, but Will is concerned that the Republican Party is sacrificing short-term political gain for what may ultimately cascade into the abolition of the Electoral College.
I like the bumper stickers that have a check mark by a ballot choice saying, "None of the above."
I have ridden a bike for years, and I am sick and tired of people pulling out in front of me. I was riding in Cape Girardeau and had to run off the pavement because someone changed lanes into my lane. I have had lit cigarettes thrown on me, had cars so close to me they looked like they where riding on my bike, dogs chase me and a whole lot of other useless things happen. Why? Because someone could not spend a few seconds to look and see if there was a biker there or not.
TO all dog owners out there, there is a kennel in Cape Girardeau County that has left dogs outside all night long. They are getting careless with whom they hire, and I'm sure that is why it has happened. Whoever boards their dogs needs to be careful of where they leave them. Dogs are our babies, no matter what size or kind they are. Please, really do some checking before you leave them places.
YES, requiring the superrich to pay a higher tax rate than the middle class would be a form of discrimination, a legal and just one.
