No more zoning

THIS IS regarding zoning outside Cape Girardeau within a two-mile radius. I live north of Cape Girardeau and east of Jackson. I think zoning property outside Cape Girardeau is not right. If I wanted zoning, I would live in Cape Girardeau.

Marking the lanes

I'D LIKE to comment on the reflective striping on city streets and state highways. I have traveled in Kentucky, which uses reflective striping that allows you to see where the lines are. When you're going to Wal-Mart on Route K, you really don't know which lane you're in. You have to guess. There's no way in the rain and especially at night that you can see those lane markers.

Broadway lights

I AM happy to see street lights on Broadway by Capaha Park are being put up. Since the street was widened and the new sidewalk moved down the slope, there was a stretch that was dark and scary to walk at night. This is a great improvement, and I commend the person who instigated this positive change.

Caring for students

THE TEACHERS in Leopold School District care no less nor no more for their students than teachers in any other district. Though they may claim otherwise, members of the public care much more about helping to produce good kids rather than scholars.

Slower trucks?

MISSOURI RESIDENTS might want to take notice of this news item, especially if you do not like driving behind slow trucks. "House Minority Floor Leader Paul LeVota, D-Independence, has introduced a bill that would require vehicles in excess of 18,000 pounds gross weight to drive 10 mph slower than the posted speed limit for all other vehicles." This bill sets the maximum speed limit for vehicles in excess of 18,000 pounds gross weight, including tractor-trailers, at 10 miles per hour less than the posted maximum speed limit and prohibits any operator of a motor vehicle from driving more than nine consecutive hours within the state.

Government power

FUNNY HOW individuals want to tell others what they can and can't do through government regulations, but they don't want the government telling them how to live their lives. The more authority you give the government, the less freedom you have. So give Congress the power, and you lose.

Cell-phone rudeness

CELL PHONES should be banned. I cannot stand seeing people talking on them as they drive, shop and eat. Cell-phone owners lack manners.

Explosive question

DOES ANYONE want a nuclear power plant or nuclear waste in Cape Girardeau?

Bumpy highways

IN 2004 voters approved a constitutional amendment for new highway bonds and directing more existing tax revenue to the Missouri Department of Transportation, which coined the programs for roads "Smoother, Safer, Sooner." This additional revenue benefited Southeast Missouri by improving I-55, among other projects. Replacing expansion joints and diamond grinding the concrete surface on the interstate definitely made for a better ride and less shock absorber repair. After several winters of freezing and thawing weather, the concrete surface is beginning to revert to its previous bumpy nature, especially in the Biehle-Perryville areas. Unless a new plan is developed to continue the funding, our interstate connection north and south may again be "Frozen, Fractured, Forgotten."

Thanks, school boards

SCHOOL BOARD Recognition week is Jan. 27 to Feb. 2. Please express your appreciation for the individuals who volunteer their time to improve our community. I thank each and every one of you.

Speaking Spanish

WE HAVE no official language, but I would advise readers that at some point in the next 50 or so years we might, and it will be Spanish. Am I literate in Spanish? Si.

Looking for a governor

ADIOS, MATT Blunt. I hate to see you leave. With all you've done for Missouri that you've bragged about in the last few days, I don't know how we'll find anybody good enough to replace you. But it's sure going to be a pleasure to find one.
