SOMEONE said Southeast Missouri State University should further cut academics, which is taking a $2 million hit, and not cut sports, which is taking only a $200,000 cut. We're talking about a university whose mission is all about education. The cuts should reflect that mission, meaning all of the cuts should have been applied to athletics. Go to a basketball game, for example, and count the number of assistant coaches. It's ridiculous.
LET'S see. We need signs at every interstate interchange. We need signs on Route K, North and South Kingshighway, Independence Street, Broadway, William Street, Main Street and as you come off the river bridge. I will be willing to bet that this is what the consulting firm will tell us for $40,000. I will give the city a bargain price and donate the five minutes it took to figure this out. By the way, we can thank China for lending us the $40,000.
THE Democrats' loss in the Massachusetts Senate race was the first of many to come for those who feel entitled to their power. However, it certainly was not an endorsement of the Republican Party. It was instead a revolt against Washington as usual. It is time for the American people to take back our country from those who squander our money and only worry about their next re-election. We have an opportunity to let them know what it is like to be unemployed or to have to work for a living.
RUSH Limbaugh has probably donated in the millions of dollars of his own money to charity. He has had an annual Leukemia Lymphoma Society Cure-a-thon since 1989. The cure-a-thon brings in millions every year. For the last several years he has donated around $300,000 or more of his own money annually.
THANK you for clarifying that Scott Brown (the winner of the U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts) is a Republican. I heard him speak after his victory, and he said he was an independent, a man of the people, just about everything but a Republican.
CAPE Girardeau would be a much safer place to drive if everyone remembered how to use a signal. This would allow others to understand why you turned left from the right lane.
THAT was a good article on Dr. Byron Glenn. He is a wonderful doctor. He saved my life when I went in for what I thought was allergies. It turned out I had double pneumonia. He worked on me for three hours in his office to rehydrate me and put me on a breathing machine so I wouldn't have to go to the hospital. He is the one who also discovered I had diabetes. I wish there were more doctors like him. He is a credit to the profession.
WHY aren't all the Missouri politicians calling for the establishment of charter schools, holding teachers accountable for the performance of their students and ending tenure? If they do these things, millions of dollars are available from the feds. If you will indulge me, I'll tell you why all of the politicians who were one-time advocates of these things have sadly lapsed into silence. The various teacher groups are opposed to all of these positive things, and pols from both parties are backpedaling as fast as they can.
I have been scanning the newspaper for over a week expecting someone to comment on state Sen. Jason Crowell's tax credit issue. Wake up, Missouri. Does no one care that these tax credits equal corporate welfare? We are losing our tax money so politicians can grant lucrative deals to whomever they wish. These tax credit deals are done behind closed doors, and I am sure the paths lead to favoritism of the politician for one reason or another. That is just human nature. Mr. Crowell is right. These tax credits should be given out in the open during the legislative session.
GOD bless our volunteers, troops and donors who are providing help to the unfortunate people of Haiti.
