I'D like to say that the Focus page in Sunday's paper was terrific. I'd like to see more focus on the past. Those were beautiful pictures of the old-time days. Thank you.
I want to comment about the plumber who was unstopping people's frozen lines and wasn't charging people who couldn't afford it. I think this is a wonderful example. It's good to have a leader like this. He is a wonderful example. We ought to all do it.
IF Missouri's federal legislators, Democrats or Republicans, vote for the health care bill, that means they think more of Nebraska than they do of Missouri. They are voting for us to pay Nebraska's bill. We can't pay Missouri's bill. We don't need to pay Nebraska's or Louisiana's. Come on, legislators, step up to the plate and represent Missouri. Vote no on health care, please.
AS I went through Jackson going 40 mph, which is the speed limit, a school bus passed me going at least 60 to 65 mph. I'm glad my children weren't on that bus.
WE want to thank our good Samaritan here in Advance for cleaning off the driveways of widows and widowers the morning after the snow. Thank you, Jimmy. We appreciate the good job you did for all of us.
WE want to tell the Cape Christian School basketball team how proud we are. The game the other night was awesome with three overtimes to determine the outcome. The team had already played one game with only five players. The team played with its heart and worked hard. It was, as always, polite and respectful. Way to go.
IT appalls me that Franklin Elementary School, with its rich heritage and architectural beauty, might be demolished. Why is it that other cities here and in Europe use and cherish old buildings? I would like more proof that renovation is more expensive than a new building. I have yet to see any building constructed within its projected budget. The new school would have neither the architectural beauty or durability of our older buildings. The public is being misled again by those who have no appreciation of our community or our heritage.
A reminder: When you go out to eat, pay attention to what time a restaurant closes. I am a waitress, and it is frustrating when people come in three minutes before we are to lock the doors and we have to serve them. Most of us have families or school work and have been on our feet eight to 10 hours. Be courteous. If it's closing time, go somewhere else.
I support hiring a sign consulting firm. However, whatever we come up with as a result of this grant, I think our signs should say in smaller print: "This sign is located here as a result of a federal grant used to hire a consulting firm about sign locations, voted on and accepted by local leadership which ordinarily opposes accepting earmarks and grants from the federal government but did so in this instance because of its overriding importance for our community."
HOW about a big sign at one of the city entrances saying, "Welcome to Cape Girardeau. Home of Signs." Then you could have an arrow on the sign pointing in a certain direction, and if a driver followed the direction of the arrow there would be another sign saying, "See. We told you so."
BLOOMFIELD Road is paved with good indentions.
THANKS to Mayor Jay Knudtson and others for endorsing the signage grant and embracing the concept that free federal tax money can be put to good local use. If there ever was an example of good pork, this is it.
