I told my son that Central Middle School rewards students for perfect or near-perfect attendance. He asked why he doesn't get rewarded for making A honor roll. I informed him the Cape School District doesn't get money for good grades. It gets money for having the students in class.
THIS is regarding the catch and release trout fishing that goes on in the Jackson City Park. I have fished there before, and when the conservation agent leaves there are 15 guys on the handicapped dock with poles out there. They're taking these trout before it's time. The rest of us are left to go back there and catch what's left over.
SOMEBODY'S worried about the sailboat sitting in the Diversion Channel. Is it really bothering you? It's not disrupting the flow of water traffic, and it's sure not disturbing the flow of water. What are you worried about?
THERE'S a stop sign and a clock in the middle of Main Street. I think Main Street would be better off if the stop sign and clock weren't there. It is not a great looking thing, but it's a hazard when you've got to stop and go around it.
I like the idea of going to a smoke-free restaurant, and I would patronize smoke-free restaurants. But I really don't think the government needs to tell the restaurants what to do. If all the smoke-free restaurants would place an advertisement in the newspaper, listing their names and where they are, I'd come visit and eat dinner.
JACKSON needs to do something about the barking dogs that bark all night long.
IF people want to breed dogs and sell their puppies in a humane manner, then it shouldn't bother them to follow the laws.
PRESIDENT Obama needs to extend that vacation in Hawaii and spend more of our taxpayer dollars. Besides, he's not doing much when he's back home in the White House.
THEY need to eliminate earmarks altogether. Eliminate them altogether and then work on the budget.
I'M in total agreement to have a smoke-free environment in Cape Girardeau. I cannot stand to enter an establishment where there's smoking going on. Therefore, I made a conscious decision a few years ago that I would not frequent those types of establishments.
I used to eat dinner downtown once a week at my favorite dining restaurant. For my New Year's resolution, I had to make a choice between breathing with my lung problem or going downtown eating dinner, listening to my favorite band.
I feel sorry for the woman who got arrested for not making her son go to school.
LIKE many smokers, I will not go to a non-smoking restaurant. The problem, as I see it, is we have no choice. I have yet to find a product that can actually help me quit. I would like to quit, but everything I've tried has failed.
THERE is no cost of living raise for Social Security, but minimum wage is going up because cost of living is going up? How does this add up?
I wonder if some of the local churches could band together and open a bowling alley/amusement center with no smoking or alcohol. Families and teens really need a place to go.
THE Scott City School Board approved what they would like to call a modified dress code for next year, saying its not uniforms. But it is just that.
THE individual who believes unemployment should be limited is wrong. Yes, there are jobs in the paper, but most people are not medical directors or digital media specialists. Not all individuals receive the full $325 a week.
KUDOS to Rachel Crader, Jordan Seabaugh and the rest of the staff for winning a well deserved national award for semoball.com.
CAL Thomas's syndicated column was a cynical attempt to scare people by reviving the bogeyman claim of death panels.
AS the old saying goes, you don't get a break when it comes to the government. Jackson got a reduction in their electric rates to help the people out. What do they do? They turn around and raise the rate to pick up trash. We still don't get a break in Jackson.
