To the editor:
I had arrived early for the meeting of the agricultural committee of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce and remained in my pickup as a van pulled alongside.
I watched in silent admiration as the driver manipulated doors, slipped into a wheelchair, opened the back of the van and drove himself to our meeting room.
That was my twilight introduction to Dr. Edward Snider, a valuable member of the committee. Nothing in his spirit was handicapped.
I recall him along with "Wheels" Kelly and others in our community. Living with adversity and dying heroically, they worked without complaining and tell us something of the human spirit.
