If you're looking for a dose of heroism, you'll find plenty of examples in the U.S. military.

The men and women who serve this country, putting their lives on the line and spending countless days away from family, deserve our utmost respect.

Recently six men were recognized for their efforts as the new inductees on the Wall of Valor at John J. Pershing VA Medical Center.

The new members of the wall include Joel Smith of Cape Girardeau; William Glosemyer of Cape Girardeau; W.C. Hogland of Patton; Jonathan Cook of Wappapello; Danny Faulk of Paragould, Arkansas; and Eric Summers, a Marine killed in a 2013 training exercise.

Donna Farley of the Daily American Republic in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, wrote about these men. You can find the story online at semissourian.com.

Each has a unique story and circumstance, but one quotation from Cook captures what we see from many veterans.

"I don't really think much about the awards, because people had to get hurt or die for the awards," Cook said.

The selflessness these individuals display, as do many others, is commendable. Though many in the military might downplay their heroic efforts, it's these individuals who model present-day heroism.

We are inspired by their patriotism and service to country, and encourage you to read more about each man recently honored on the wall.

Thank you to those who serve in our military.
