Cape Girardeau lost one of its finest citizens this past weekend with the death of Glenn J. Hutson.

Retailer, civic leader, Christian, family man -- Glenn Jefferson Hutson was all these, and more. As his minister said Monday in eulogizing him, he was indeed something special. Through a long life Mr. Hutson achieved much, lived much, enjoyed much, and gave much -- to all of us, especially here in Cape Girardeau. His winsome and cheerful manner won him many friends, just as his sound and honest business practices won him the respect of all.

Some say that men such as Mr. Hutson, who lived through the Great Depression, and began a business more with human than financial capital, are a lost breed. We hope not. If followed, his example can ensure that this is not so.

We join his large family and his countless friends in mourning the passing of one of Cape Girardeau's leading citizens. With the passing of such a great guy, we are saddened. But we are left rich with memories, and a sterling example to emulate. That's a legacy worthy of Glenn Jefferson Hutson.
