Scouting award winner serves many organizations

Congratulations to John M. Thompson, recipient of the Dr. James A. Kinder Good Scout Award. At the community dinner attended by about 110 people Thursday, Thompson was honored for his many years of service.

Thompson's record speaks for itself. Not only did he earn his Eagle Scout Award almost 50 years ago, after starting out as a Cub Scout, but he was also awarded the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth just four years ago. A Jackson native, his various leadership roles in the community are noteworthy. Anyone can get a pat on the back from people who barely know him, but when he receives accolades from those who know him best -- who have worked in close proximity to him -- it speaks volumes. It testifies to his character and work ethic.

Master of ceremonies Frank Kinder, the president of Red Letter Communications and one of the event's organizers, said, "I've served with John on the board of [SoutheastHEALTH], and he truly has a servant's heart."

As the Southeast Missourian reported following the tribute dinner, Thompson's support in his hometown has been "tireless" and "longtime." In addition to his commitment to the Scouts, his service includes being the president and director of The Bank of Missouri and sitting on the boards of SoutheastHEALTH, the Boy Scouts of America Greater St. Louis Area Council, as well as other area organizations.

Thompson has spent years making his work about others, but even on a night set aside for him, he was helping to do good: The dinner raised more than $53,000 to be used for local Scouts programs. The work continues, and Thompson is an integral part of it. In keeping with the Boy Scouts' motto, he has managed to "be prepared."
