If you are on the roadways in the morning or afternoon you've probably noticed an uptick in traffic. Yes, many students are back in school. And with the increased traffic and school bus stops, it's a good time to remind drivers to be careful.
A number of local students ride the school bus. As you follow these vehicles, please watch for children. When the buses slow down and post stop signs, take them seriously. We hope most parents tell their children to watch for traffic, but some students may forget in their haste to join friends heading to school or returning home.
Back-to-school season is an exciting time. For students there's the thrill of seeing friends, starting new classes and embracing new opportunities. This excitement doesn't stop in grade school or high school. Southeast Missouri State University is bustling with thousands of students. Many walk around campus, while others use scooters or other methods of transportation. Watch for these folks, too.
All of us are busy, particularly with school back in session and various fall events on the schedule. However, we should always make careful driving a priority and watch for others.
Be safe.
