To the editor:
Cape Girardeau's motto seems to be "Blow It Up! Tear It Down!"
Let's take the money our leaders want to spend on some firm to tell us what to do with our City of Pride and City of Roses and save our bridge. Make the old bridge a toll bridge to pay for upkeep. It may look sad, but it could be a diamond in the rough.
Make it into a park with tables and benches. Use it to stroll over the river to watch the boats. Have bands playing as the warm breezes send the sounds down the turn of the river as two lovers hold hands. Clean up the banks of the Mississippi River for recreation areas.
Let's take our natural resources and use them for our profit of fun as well as for the benefit of local businesses. We have a hotel that was about to be torn down. Now look what is happening to it. Cape Girardeau can shine like other Mississippi River towns.
Save the bridge. It's something that won't have to be moved when the water rises and goes down. Remember Tina Turner's song, "Rollin', Rollin', Rollin' on the River." Let's keep the beat going and remember where the river runs.
