The good times and general fun of Riverfest are about to descend again on downtown Cape Girardeau. Weather permitting -- even though the Mississippi River remains above flood stage -- thousands of festival-minded fun-seekers will fill the historic downtown for a day-and-a-half salute to the mighty river.
The carnival atmosphere of Riverfest is one of the highlights of the year for a city whose connections to the river date from its earliest settlement. Even after 200-plus years, the Mississippi River continues to be a dominant force in Cape Girardeau, although a flood wall keeps the downtown dry even when the river looks for ways to spill over its banks.
Food and fun galore await all those who will make downtown Cape Girardeau their destination beginning this afternoon and continuing well into Saturday night.
Let the good times roll.
