Simon LeVay of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego said last week his research might show a biological basis for homosexuality.
LeVay's studies have found that a group of brain cells believed to guide male sex drive is up to twice as large in heterosexual as in homosexual men. The California researcher said the finding suggests a possible biological origin for homosexuality.
Undoubtedly, the gay community will treat this new discovery with some befuddlement. On one hand, a biological link to homosexuality would strengthen their long-standing contention that they have no more choice in the matter of their sexual orientation than they have in choosing the color of their eyes.
But biological causes for the "condition" of homosexuality also could lead to scientific treatments. Perhaps a hormonal injection would cause the smaller cell mass to grow and function normally, presumably re-orienting a man's sexual drive toward the opposite sex.
Some in the homosexual community already have revealed their muddleheadedness concerning LeVay's findings. Robert Bray, spokesman for the Gay and Lesbian Task Force, was quoted by a national news service as saying LeVay's study is "fascinating," and that he believes "there is a need for greater research on homosexuality because the body of data is extremely narrow."
But Bray also said "we live in a society that loathes homosexuals," and that he was concerned that the study could encourage some anti-homosexual groups to believe that sexual orientation could be changed "if we tweaked this chromosome and rearranged that cell."
But such confusion is common among radical groups who resort to any means to impose their morality usually expressed as amorality, or no morals at all on the whole of society. Radical homosexuals and AIDS activists have long stressed that their sodomitic yearnings are as natural as any heterosexual desires shared by the majority of humans.
Bray complains about a society that loathes homosexuals. In fact, few heterosexuals loathe homosexuals. Most just think sodomy and homosexuality are disgusting and abnormal. It's the radical homosexuals who have the corner on loathing.
They abhor those with a world view based on Judeo-Christian ethics as mandated in the Bible, a view that considers homosexuality, and indeed any sexual relations outside the bonds of marriage, wrong.
But it's bad public relations and PR is crucial when you're trying to secure billions of taxpayer dollars for such causes as AIDS research and federally subsidized "homo-erotic art" to come out publicly and say with candor, "To hell with your standards and Christian morality, we're sodomites because we like it."
It's much more pragmatic to say instead, ~"We're just like you, only we were born with desires for those of the same sex. We can't really help it." That contention also helps recruitment. Those with homosexual thoughts can come unashamed out of the closet, free of guilt and finally "be who they really are."
Such a stance also affords homosexuals the coveted status of victims. In today's America, such "victims" are the beneficiaries of countless swindle-the-taxpayer legislative mandates to help "rectify injustices," unceasing litigation to end "employee discrimination," and judicial activism that usurps society's democratically chosen morality.
In fairness to California researcher LeVay, it should be pointed out that he sees his discovery as inconclusive at best. He said his findings do not prove that male homosexuality is a biological destiny caused by brain structure or development, and that more research is needed to precisely interpret his findings.
But he added that, based on animal studies, "I would put my money on the idea" that the brain difference influences homosexual behavior.
Other scientists have called the findings from the study of human brains "highly speculative," but consistent with research using laboratory rats. One California scientist said his research has shown that sexual behavior of rats can be manipulated before birth if certain hormones are injected while the brain is forming.
But these scientists seem to miss the point many heterosexuals believe is key to their view of homosexuality.
Even if there is a link between brain structure and whether or not someone will have homosexual or heterosexual tendencies, it's fallacious to simply assume that someone born with a homosexual inclination must act out that passion (unless of course you're talking about mindless lab rats, which reflects the scientific fallacy).
The whole point of law is to legislate a code of what's morally accepted by society. Laws that prohibit murder, rape, theft and deceit all infringe on the behavior of a segment of society namely, murderers, rapists, thieves and liars. Such persons must either conform to society's standards by curtailing their inclinations or suffer the consequences of their actions.
What would happen, as to an extent some of the pseudo-scientific psychologists already have tried, if we were able to find some physiological cause for the behavior of murderers, rapists, thieves and liars. What would happen if they too were found to be unjustly jailed and their "rights" violated for merely acting out yearnings seeded deep within them at birth.
Such people too would be victims, discriminated against because their behavior doesn't comply with white European male-dominated societal norms.
Such a scenario seems absurd, of course, for we would still expect those people to curb their desires to murder, rape, steal and lie. They would necessarily have to relinquish their "rights" and suffer "discrimination" for the good of society.
So what is wrong with a society that also sets standards for sexuality and expects those with other inclinations to curb their yearnings and conform. Obviously, some segment of the population won't conform, which is why we have murderers, rapists, thieves and liars. So too will we always have homosexuals and philanderers. But is that any reason to change societal norms and the Judeo-Christian absolutes they're based upon?
That's exactly what the homosexual enemies of society wish to do, and, if an unwatchful silent majority allows it to, research like LeVay's will only further their cause.
