It might be past Labor Day, but for local swimming enthusiasts there is a great option available to enjoy a few laps in the water.

The Central Municipal Pool, the only public Olympic-size pool in Cape Girardeau, recently underwent its first major renovation in 31 years of operation. With the $1 million undertaking complete, the pool now has a new "bubble" and air-handling units for swimming during colder months, a repainted pool and deck -- which was also resurfaced -- new diving boards and deck furnishings, new fencing and a repaired wading pool.

The bathhouse was also upgraded. In addition to improved dressing rooms, there is a new walk-in area as well as a family changing room and new light fixtures.

The project was primarily financed with parks tax dollars. However, the Cape Girardeau School District paid for roughly half of the new "bubble," and the Gators swim team contributed $6,000 toward the main pool area's repainting.

The municipal pool was built thanks to a partnership between the city and the Cape Girardeau School District. The facility is a good option for young and old alike to swim for personal enjoyment and exercise. Local swim teams have also benefited from having a facility to practice in and compete year-round.

The new additions and improvements provide a safer and healthier environment for all, and we commend those who helped make the project happen.
