The need is dire. The American Red Cross has put out the call for blood throughout the region.
Bad weather in recent weeks has put a damper on blood collections. A number of drives were canceled in late December and early January due to the ice and extreme cold weather.
Normally, the local blood bank keeps a two-day supply on hand, which is about 1,000 units. But the supply has dwindled to a one-day reserve, which is about 500 units.
Giving blood is not time consuming. It's a relatively painless procedure. In fact, the donation time offers a breather from life's hectic rat race. Many donors find the joy of giving is well worth the time and return again and again.
Scheduled drives include one today from x to x at St. Francis Medical Center. There will be a three-day drive at West Park Mall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. A drive is planned for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. next Tuesday at NationsBank. And a drive will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. next Wednesday at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center.
Take the time in the coming weeks to give the gift of life. You'll be glad you did.
