The Discovery Playhouse, a hands-on museum for children, is adding a shine to Broadway. After a couple of years of planning, fundraising, labor and support, the playhouse has opened. If the early crowds of young explorers are any indication, the playhouse will amuse, entertain and educate a large number of young visitors -- and their parents -- in the months ahead.
The playhouse at 502 Broadway is open every day except Mondays. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday. Friday's schedule is 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday the playhouse is open from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is $4 for ages 2 and older.
In addition to some permanent displays, the playhouse also features visiting exhibits, so watch for announcements of new things to see and do. In addition, attention is being focused on the second floor of the museum, where more activities and exhibits are planned.
As efforts to improve Cape Girardeau's downtown continue, especially through objectives identified by the DREAM Initiative, The Discovery Playhouse is a good example of what can be done. With such major improvements as Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus, Riverfront Park, the soon-to-be-constructed Fountain Street access plus arts and entertainment venues, downtown's momentum is building.
