Old Town Cape presents annual awards

The early part of the year is considered "awards season" because of the number of awards shows that take place: the Academy Awards, the Grammys and others. Locally, we have an awards season of sorts around this time of year, as well, as many organizations recognize those who have contributed to their mission.

Thursday night, it was Old Town Cape's turn. The organization's awards recognize those who make outstanding contributions to the culture of downtown.

Bo Kleman of Realty Executives of Cape Girardeau was chosen as Volunteer of the Year for her work with Old Town Cape.

The Business Excellence Award went to Sherry Yaeger's Renaissance for outstanding business practices and support of Old Town Cape's vision.

Rocky and Laurie Everett took home the John Boardman Excellence in Historic Rehabilitation award for their work reinvigorating the Indie House. The historic building on Broadway is more than 100 years old.

Mike and Paula Haas were presented the Judith Ann Crow Residential Historic Rehabilitation Award for their restoration of the Queen Anne-style home at 401 Themis St.

The Charles L. Hutson Visionary Award was presented to Jayne Ervin of Jayson Jewelers, who is an original member of Old Town Cape. In the past, Ervin played an invaluable role in the organizing of Cape's Riverfest, and has helped organize downtown Christmas festivities and other projects, in addition to living and working downtown for 25 years.
