The Notre Dame class of 1963 celebrated its 50th reunion this past weekend with an informal gathering at Auburn Place Hotel on Friday night and a more formal dinner party at the Elks Lodge on Saturday.

There were 65 graduates in the class with five classmates deceased and 60 of us still contributing to life in the manner in which we were taught at Notre Dame. A total of 49 classmates registered for both nights of the reunion, and great fun was had by all.

Early in the year, an email chain was set up capturing 59 classmates online where "conversations" and stories took place over the many months leading to the reunion. The conversations resulted in a comprehensive book of memories and "life stories" of the majority of the classmates, and there were sufficient copies of the book to share with all classmates attending.

Notre Dame has such a great history of teaching beyond the books, and the class of 1963 was no exception. The overwhelming majority of the graduates of 1963 have been happily married for more than 40 years, steeped in faith, and with great and still-growing families. It was fun and quite refreshing to read the life stories of the classmates, and although we all took many varied paths in life, it was clear there was a common bond between us and there was a great foundation of knowledge and goodness upon which we built our lives.

This was an exceptional weekend for all of us, and there is no question that prior and future classes of Notre Dame will make the same claims as we do. This is an incredible high school that simply does things right and for the right reason. What a treasure for the community of Cape Girardeau.

God bless Brother David and Notre Dame Regional High School.
