The Cape Girardeau School District has announced the hiring of Dr. Jim Welker as its new superintendent.
Welker is an assistant superintendent in the Jackson School District where he oversees finances. His background in finances makes him a good fit for the Cape Girardeau district, considering some of the accounting problems the Cape Girardeau district has seen in the past year.
More than that, Welker appears to be an upstanding individual. Those who know him well speak highly of the man, who has lived in Cape Girardeau for 27 years. He has worked in the Jackson district for eight years.
There is hope that the Cape Girardeau district, with its hiring of Welker, might have found a solution to its revolving-door situation with superintendents in recent years. With many local ties, a strong educational background and financial know-how, we hope Welker is the superintendent for years and years to come.
We wish him the best.
