The Public Art Committee of Cape Girardeau will officially unveil new sculptures around downtown today at a 5:30 p.m. reception at the Vasterling Suites Courtyard at Broadway and Fountain Street.

The sculptures were introduced in 2014, at about the same time the Broadway renovation project was completed.

For 2018, seven artists were chosen based on their background, skill level and concept or proposal, according to a recent report by Josh Hartwig.

The Public Arts Committee chooses a juror and calls to multiple artists are placed nationwide, including different arts councils and universities.

Two new artists will be featured this year: Craig Snyder of Plymouth, Minnesota, and Alex Mendez of Decatur, Indiana.

The exhibition rotates yearly, and Steffens added that the sculptures are available for purchase as well.

Funding for the exhibit is provided by the City of Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department, the National Endowment for the Arts and Old Town Cape Inc.

The sculptures have become a part of the landscape along Broadway and downtown Cape. We encourage you to attend the reception and meet some of the artists.
