All of the Cape River Heritage Museum board members and its supporters were saddened by the loss of our former director and mentor Marjorie Thompson, who passed away on July 26, 2011, at the age of 86. We will never forget her contagious laugh or her constant devotion to the museum.
Saturday, starting 10 a.m., is Heritage Day with old-time games, crafts and a talk by Chief Paul White Eagle at 11 a.m. On Nov. 18, our writers' group will launch the second annual Heartland Heritage Anthology with a reception starting at 5 p.m.
May 2012 is the opening of a traveling exhibit, Divided Loyalties, created by the Missouri State Archives in commemoration of the Civil War.
Keep an eye out for a forthcoming book titled "Tastes and Tales of Southeast Missouri," which is a joint project of the museum and the League of Women Voters. In addition to more than 100 recipes, the book will contain stories about cooks, food and traditions in the region.
There is still time to see our 2011 exhibit, "Cape Girardeau: From Trading Post to River City," which highlights the town's origins. The Marie and R.B. Oliver has been refurbished and the museum has beautiful and historic quilts on exhibit until Nov. 18.
If you want to help keep the museum alive and growing, please join or renew your membership, honor a loved one, friend or hero with a Legacy Gift, or shop in our Curiosity Shop. Thank you so much for your support.
JOHN HOLCOMB, president,
