For more than five years, Charles McClain championed reform and innovation as Missouri's commissioner of higher education. He had a bird's eye view of the strengths and weaknesses of the state's colleges and universities.
But now, he is stepping aside. He resigned as commissioner Sept. 1.
McClain earns high marks from educational leaders around the state. His efforts will leave a lasting mark on Missouri's system of higher education.
His innovation first led to dramatic changes and improvements at Northeast Missouri State University. As its president, he molded it into the state's liberal arts institution, and built a national reputation for excellence that remains.
Then as commissioner, he more clearly defined university and college missions, and tried to accomplish improvements in tight financial times. He not only preached quality, he achieved it.
We wish Charles McClain well in his future endeavors. We are confident his service to Missouri has resulted in better colleges and universities for years to come.
