To the editor:
I am a senior student-athlete at Southeast Missouri State University, and I am very concerned about the current mascot/nickname debate. I believe it is vital for this institution to stop living in the past and retire the Indian/Otahkian nicknames. Even if the decision is not the popular thing, it seems to be the best thing to do. The current situation has facilitated poor school spirit and a lack of student tradition or connection to Southeast. In order to provide those things for future generations of students, we must be able to use our nickname. As an athlete, I feel no connection with the Indian as a symbol of my team. Something is missing, and I see this debate as a chance to fill the void.
By replacing Indians, we can develop a usable mascot and marketing plan. This would provide an opportunity to better promote Southeast to students and the community. Eventually, school spirit, pride and tradition will develop. I see this newly formed connection making Southeast stronger in the future. If students take more than a degree and student loans away from Southeast, they will be more likely to contribute as alumni.
I think anyone who wants to continue with the Indians as a nickname is holding this institution and its students back. The board of regents must set aside personal agendas and think hard about what is best for the university. Please, move forward, not back. Replace our nickname.
